That video really does add so much to the song. I also didn't see Cosby in the video or mentioned on Genius, which is probably a good thing lol
"Make the wrong turn, be it will or the wheel alignment" god nobody ever has been on his level in terms of writing raps
Yikes Not sure about the concept of a white guy turning into a bunch of POC but the video is definitely the same
I think Kendrick is definitely going to talk a lot about “culture” on this album. I’ve avoided listening, but one of the leaks from 2020 seems to be about “cancel culture” and separation of art / artist. I just pray it isn’t cringey or extremely inflammatory for no reason. I trust Kendrick to have something interesting to say on it even if I don’t necessarily agree with all he’s saying. Hopefully at the very least it can clear the low, low bar of being as tone deaf as Kanye bringing out DaBaby and Marilyn Manson on Jail as some sort of cancel culture statement. It also might not even make the album!
Has the heart series generally been a precursor to themes that Kendrick explores on the succeeding albums?
If that were the case, I would definitely expect him to clear the bar of Kanye straight-up doing PR stunts, but at the same time, it's worth remembering the MJ lines on "Mortal Man." Even the Tupac worship. It doesn't bother me on a personal level, but it's complicated, and it's also a pretty good microcosm of why we shouldn't put people on pedestals no matter how good they are at something or how smart they seem.
That coupled with his endorsement of XXXTentacion, I'm not expecting to love everything he would have to say on stuff like that but I don't think he would be outright inflammatory /hateful
The video and song weren’t making excuses for anyone represented’s actions, it was pretty clearly critiquing the way black trauma is treated as spectacle, and critiquing the idea of blackness being “the culture” when black Americans who create “the culture” are still not extended the same humanity or empathy as the dominant culture. The album will likely expand on those ideas and, like much of Kendrick’s work, be challenging and contradictory and extremely dense and thoughtful while still open to critique and disagreement. I doubt it’d be as blunt as Kanye’s semiotics.
I’m gonna wait to hear it before having a take, no real way to speculate yet. but yeah, the Heart songs have not been on the album, no idea what it will sound like yet.
As someone who has followed Kendrick's career pretty closely since Section.80 I either completely forgot about The Heart Series, or didn't know about it entirely. Kind of feel ashamed right now.
this is honestly the first part of the series i've ever heard. i looked the first 4 parts up on YT last night lol
What's the general consensus on Overly Dedicated? Section80 is the furthest back I have dug into his disography but I expect there are probably some gems in his earlier stuff too
