I feel like an underrated swing at this type of record was KOD by J Cole. I think the issue being is that the album came off as very judge-y of the lifestyle of rap, whereas one of Kendrick’s strongest points is his ability to make commentary while it not feeling like it’s coming from a high horse place. It’s very Nas like in that way.

J Cole has such a wild range of quality, some of the best material and some of the absolute worst simultaneously

    KOD is good

One of my roommates likes J Cole and some tracks will pop on and I'm like "oh hey that's not bad" but there is entirely too much music out there to have myself sit down and listen through a whole J Cole album

The 2014 forest hills Dr album is really good

  7. Cole is somehow overrated and overhated at the same time. Interesting phenomenon. I don't think he's ever released something consistently good enough for me to reach for one of his albums a second time.

    Trusted

His early mixtapes were good, his actual albums are very mediocre. It’s especially disappointing because he’ll have a verse from like on “Johnny P’s Caddy” that reminds you that he’s capable of so much more

where would i be if i was my brain Prestigious

Cole stans make me very weary of listening to his albums again.

He's got the talent but I kinda wish he’d let others handle some production earlier in his career.

EDIT: This is my favorite version of J.Cole

Before the beef, the feature run he went on around the off season album was insanity.

  12. He does good features. Neither he nor Drake belong in the "big three" conversation from a quality standpoint.

Oh yea his feature on JID's Off Deez is pretty great, although it was originally supposed to be a Kendrick feature which makes me so mad that it didn't happen lol

J Cole is fine. Some good and some bad. There are so many better rappers to listen to that i don’t feel compelled to dig deeper than that.

I don't dislike him but I find him to mostly make forgettable music. I've listened to all his albums multiple times and I still can't really imagine what he sounds like in my head

Forest Hills Drive is one of the best hip-hop albums of the 2010's imo but I'm a fan of his in general

He's also absolutely incredible live, one of the few rappers that I think might be BETTER live

I was never a J. Cole fan, despite many attempts to get into his stuff, but I did really like Might Delete Later but I can't remember the last time I went back to it.

J Cole has always been entirely forgettable to me. Heard him so many times but still wouldn't be able to tell you who he was if someone played something of his to me.

I do think if I didn't get into J Cole in mixtape era I would not have bothered keeping up with him at all so I don't really encourage anyone to go back and dig in more
