That Dr. Dre performance was expertly crafted elder millennial bait so that number is not surprising.
I work with a few Drake stans and their response was "Man I don't like Kendrick... But it was hard to sit there and watch and not bob your head"
Yeah, like I said in the hip-hop thread, it felt sort of sanitized (maybe the point?) and deep down I wish he just outright spoke his truth, looking beyond the Drake beef at least for this performance where he has the biggest opportunity to make a statement. But idk maybe that’s naive
I’m of the opinion that the medium (apple produced halftime show for billionaire owned sporting event) is the message.
TPAB era Kendrick is probably the closest we'll get to him making a "statement" especially considering some of the lyrical content on GNX
Kendrick is literally the black entertainer that Malcolm criticizes, amongst others, as the one who is made spokesman or leader of Black people. He just does it with more of a black radical and nationalist aesthetic without any of the politics, all while saying he doesn’t want to be that savior. He kinda wants it both ways.
ironic considering how much of the set was hits. Do they not consider "Humble" or "DNA" or "tv off" to be bangers? aren't you a big Drake fan? lol Muddy or not, Mr. Morale is 100% the closest he's come to delivering some kind of message. TPAB is great, but a lot of that is imagery while Mr. Morale is actively challenging.
Correct me if wrong, but is this the first time they've released the halftime show as an audio release?
Yes, and I really enjoy Kendrick’s music too. I also love blink-182 and Sum 41. How does any of that negate my point about Kendrick having nothing interesting or revolutionary to say politically?
Or people form intense relationships with art because it moves our souls and as a result we put a lot of stake in the artists as social leaders. We’ve been doing it since the 60s, it’s not that complicated.
The point is it’s a dead end. It has not led to any tangible victories. It’s an effective way for the ruling class to co-opt and neutralise opposition
I'm worried the guy whose job is making a lot of money with music might be concerned with not only music but also making a lot of money
