One good thing about UO is that they had the latest HAIM album on vinyl like two weeks before the official release, so quickly picked one of those up

    Cool song.

Also, it's October 4th and SweetSexySavage is still the album of the year.

Not too sure about this song, definitely not sure about the video description haha

"Budweiser in partnership with KEHLANI with award winning director, FLEUR FORTUNE present the Halloween anthem the world has been waiting for."

Who else is preemptively mad at this album not being on most end year lists on and off this forum

January releases get forgotten way too often, purely because of when they come out

  14. I'll probably stick to a top 50 this year and this will be on it but probably in the back half

Plus it's kind of a traditional R&B album which always get overlooked

Distraction is nominated for best R&B song but the album isn't up for best R&B album which is a travesty.

God forbid highlighting a R&B album actually embraces R&B.

It shouldn't but it won't and I'm already angry about it lmao

Yet all these thinly veiled indie rock sites will gush about the SZA album so they can pretend they know and care about R&B. No shots at SZA.

I'll write you into all of my songs Supporter

one of the biggest misfires of the year for me was not starting this album with distraction lol

Glad to see Distraction blew up, didn't know that. This album's too inconsistent for me to consider in my top 10.

Agreed on the SZA point though, if the SZA album is in the conversation so should this. Snubbed

The SZA album is not my cup of tea but I understand that it is good and should be in the conversation. The thing is that it isn't pretty much the only R&B album in the conversation because it's so much better than other R&B albums, but because it came out on TDE, a go-to brand for white critics (not that there aren't great white rap/R&B writers, but you know what I mean, basically people that spend way too much time tweeting about Weezer) to diversify their websites/lists. It's the same with Kendrick (and Kanye) albums being the only rap albums on lists full of "rock" albums. It's boring, painfully transparent and shouldn't fly in 2017.

I want to like this album more, but I just find it to be too long with not enough going on to sustain the length. It's good, some songs are excellent, but it doesn't work as an entire project for me. I do think the SZA album is exceedingly better than this, but the best R&B album of the year is Kelela.

Well yeah the Kelela album is great, but it already has one leg up in the Pitchfork extended universe that is music criticism in 2017 because it isn't traditional contemporary R&B (which is an insane description, I'm aware).

I want to be clear: I'm not saying that Kehlani's album is necessarily better (though I think it is, it's my favorite album of the year) and that everybody should think it is better than other, more talked about R&B albums. What I'm saying is that, in most cases, it being less good than those other albums is not the reason it isn't in the conversation as much. That's because it makes no attemts to hide the fact that is an R&B album in the tradition of artists like Brandy, which is largely not something that pulls any emotional strings in current music criticism, and because it is not associated with go-to indie rock website/critic diversification brands/labels/artist like TDE, Kanye or Beyonce. See my last post for more on this.

At least Kehlani's album came out however, that's more than is granted a lot of other talented R&B singers (looking at you, executives holding back Tinashe).

  24. This album has some really fantastic songs but I don't love it as an "album". Sequencing isn't great and overall tracklist is way too long -- not to mention a few just straight up misses.

SZA, Daniel Caesar, and Kelela will all rank higher for me, and it has nothing to do with their labels. They're just better records

the sza album is great, it has a really wonderful flow from beginning to end, but the kehlani album is just my absolute shit and i think the sprawl is part of why i like it. it's a vibe, you get to hang out in it for an hour, all of the songs are good to great
