why dont you go look into the relationship between capitalism and imperialism and then maybe we can have an actual intelligent discussion.

Maintaining capitalist status quo has killed millions throughout the years (both through foreign wars, and at home due to poverty/lack of healthcare/etc), they were just never positioned as the good guys.

People have resorted to eating dogs in Venezuela because they don’t have food, because of the way their government has run.

    In this instance, yes.

and don't come at me with that, dogs are our friends bullshit. we've literally played god breeding them in our own image. it's sick and twisted how we make them perform tricks for our amusement.

Well Venezuela isn’t socialist in any meaningful sense, since ~70% of its economy is privately owned (source: Venezuela: Why capitalism, not socialism, is to blame for corruption; this is almost two years old so it might be slightly out of date). Also, if you’re going to use one country as an example of socialism failing everywhere, then it’s totally fair for Jake to do the same thing, especially when the us is a better representation of capitalism than Venezuela is of socialism, let alone communism

“Definitely not perfect” is a tame way to describe the institution responsible for slavery and the genocide of Native Americans

communism doesn’t work (complete disaster) - capitalism doesn’t work either but we have failed to find something better that actually works

    the Qs are:

is a humane capitalist system something that can be achieved or is it a contradiction and we need something else altogether

personally, I’m fine with a capitalist system as long as a vast majority of human poulation live with dignity and all basic needs and rights (health, education, etc.) covered - if there’s peeps with more money than others, I won’t be salty is everyone else is doing generally good

You actually make a valid point.

Is it just societial construct that keeps us from eating some and not others?

The book Eating Animals addresses this point.

Is this album going to be good?

  22. Look, no one is trying to say the Venezuela or Cuba or whatever have no problems, but they really can't be understood without considering the United States' role in their history. Socialism and Communism in Latin America exploded during the cold war, so whenever they took power - either through elections (Chile, Guatemala) or popular revolutions (Cuba) - the US either overthrew them through military might or sabotage or attempted to and failed. One of their methods of sabotage was economic sanctions, and they've been mostly effective. In Chile, a socialist president won an election (on his third try, overcoming the CIA funding his opponents and ads about how he kills children) and was immediately hit with crippling economic sanctions. This understandably spurred lots of protests and created support for the US to bomb the presidential palace until the President resigned and was replaced with US puppet Pinochet. In Cuba, they have resisted the outright coups but still suffer an embargo which makes it hard to have a functioning economy - and despite that, people live with great healthcare and infrastructure, even if they lack luxury products or good housing.

My point is not to say every problem is the US' fault at all, but to say that a lot are, and you can't actually judge any of these countries (especially in Latin America) as a whole without considering the US' role. Also, consider the previous economic situation of the country in question. Cuba has always been very poor. It is still not as poor as Haiti, which is capitalist.

You don't see any correlation between capitalism and slavery? How America rose as a nation through the exploitation of slave labor?

Also you literally can't be a capitalist and a Christian - if you call yourself both you are lying. Just throwing that out there idk if we discussed that
