Still Brazy was my favorite hip hop album last year. Blonde was my AOTY but I don't think that's a hip hop album.
Amazing year for hip-hop with Danny Brown, Schoolboy Q, Thug, Chance, and Noname Dont forget Anderson .Paak tho
Maybe the fact that he's collaborated with a number of hip-hop artists both in the past and on the album, and the fact that it's an R&B album which is obviously a very closely related genre. You don't have to be so condescending. Sorry I slipped-up on one genre tag.
The collaborations on an album does not define an album's genre, nor do previous works by the artist.
But he explained why he made that leap though. As incorrect as it was it was most certainly not that.
Just because an album is R&B doesn't mean it's also hip hop, they're two separate genres. Frank Ocean is primarily an R&B artist.
I've seen people describe The Weeknd as hip hop too lol. He has a few songs leaning that way but overall nah. And while Frank Ocean is R&B for the most part I'd argue he doesn't use conventially R&B instrumentation, lot of Dream pop on this record
