I remember a “Weezy” character who was kind of a fun troll who kept getting banned for making ridiculous threads.
I remember not liking zion or Yes. And? but I’m sure they were fine in retrospect Die Hard and I were Facebook friends, then he unfriended me immediately after liking a pic of mine lol Praetor was cool as hell, p sure he and I are FB friends still
Lol I rember writing my first user review ever for All Get Out's The Season, I was like a junior in high school, and the only comment it got was @Cody saying "this is HARDLY indie-pop" he wasn't wrong, but damn
A weirdly distinct memory I have from AP was when Nostalgia Ultra came out and so many people immediately listened bc Odd Future was the hottest shit at the time, and kemichels (or however you spell it) came in and immediately started ragging on it for really dumb reasons (like that the alarm clock at the end of the first song was annoying or something) and quickly got bullied into accepting that it’s good lol. No idea why that one sticks with me
In my goodbye to AP post I thanked: "The movie thread posters, Tetra, Brandon, Adam, Tyler, Mal, Darr, Steven, Safeword, Milkshake," Are Adam, Steven and Safeword here? I don't even remember their usernames.
I remember my MBDTF review getting hella comments - I think Thomas and I had the 5 most read reviews on the site hah
Odd Future got insane backlash in 2011 on here. It’s interesting to me because a lot of those projects haven’t aged well, although it’s impossible to deny the impact they made on the landscape of hip hop. But the main figures of that collective ended up releasing all this incredible music to this day
I think the first time I got banned was for arguing with Jason about Odd Future. What an odd hill for me to die on
What happened to CoandCa? Had an aqua teen avatar and iirc started that extremely weird mmmmhayleymmmm meme lol. That person was around forever too
Other good memories include getting physical(!) releases from the AP mailbox and becoming friends with a lot of those smaller artists I covered. Kyle Adem in particular. Also got to hop on the Julien Baker train very early, I remember getting a random advance of Sprained Ankle that blew me away and having the chance to interview her back in 2015. I think that interview got carried over to this site. Good shit
It really can’t be overstated just how weird and out of left field they were when they came out, and I think most people probably thought they would be just a fad that passes. But the production on something like “Yonkers” would be kinda par for the course today
Yeah I don’t remember if every staffer was “banned” from posting news about them but Jason was very vocal about not giving them attention himself
It definitely felt like a more niche corner of the site than now. Very antagonistic! The folks in whatever criterion or world cinema thread we had definitely shaped my early taste, especially Mal (and that ultimately set me on path to where I am in life now lmfao)
