Done. I have some thoughts: 1. Closed on Sunday is absolutely terrible. 2. There is plenty of Gospel on this album. I have no idea what the fuck people are talking about. 3. Someone said Kanye maybe doesn't want to rap anymore. I can see that. 4. This isn't a great album. However, if Kanye weren't the person he is now outside of his music, or if someone else had made exactly the same album, the reception to this album would be better. That's not a shot, at least not at anyone here, just something I believe to be true. I don't think it's a terrible album either, largely because a lot of the music is too good for that (see my next point). 5. The parts that work (e.g. the run from tracks 1-3, God Is, Use This Gospel), work largely despite Kanye's raps/vocals and not because of them. Lyrically he's just not good on this. I’m not saying that because the religious content as I'm open and used to that. He has rapped far better about God before. I therefore think that, in his desire to translate Sunday Services into an album, if that is indeed what he wanted to do, he should have made an instrumental album, or should have used (almost) exclusively appropriate guest vocalists. P.S. Welcome Back > Jesus Is King still stands, as I predicted.
if this whole trend of every one of his albums being worse than the previous ones continues on like it has been, I can't even imagine what a shitshow the next one will be
Played it again this morning. Far more redeemable than I remember yesterday. And I think Kanye is updating it already.
I like a lot of the production on this. It’s pretty digestible and easy listening tbh. The gospel moments work really well. The lyrics are not great however.
Who cares if it’s bad or good, he’s causing a huge reaction and everyone’s talking about it. It’s just keeping his name out there even more. He ultimately wins.
I think half of this is ranges from very middling to outright bad with some great instrumentals in between, but there are some moments I genuinely enjoy. Specifically, I think "Follow God" is excellent
the worst line on “Closed on Sunday” is actually the lemonade one. At least I can make sense of the chick fil a line. Don’t get the lemonade reference.
This album blows and I don’t think it would have been received any better if it wasn’t Kanye. It’s very haphazardly thrown together, and the lyrics are too heavy-handed. Worst of all though, what a waste of a Clipse feature
I decided to listen to this again out of boredom and liked it even less lmao Can't remember the last time I disliked an album this much
this is an entirely irrelevant point that does not need to be made. the album would not exist as it does if it weren't for kanye's shit outside of his music. all of that, his fucking MAGA shit, his born again christian shit, is the reason why this album exists. it is entirely fair to judge it as such. there is no hypothetical scenario where kanye is a different person and this album exists.
He's cynically using religion as a shield so people can't come at him for blowing smoke up Trump's ass. I've said before and I'll say it again, this is probably the most transparently bullshit thing he's done.
