I really just think he's checked out at this point. It was very weird hearing him try to talk about being excited to make music again when like a year ago he was saying Def Jam wouldn't let him out of his contract
I mean if you're willing to support the dude at this stage you're willing to jump through many smaller hoops
Threw this on for a listen. My buddy texted me and said: This sounds like some Chance the Rapper played backward thru speakerphone in a church
I think I, and others, do need to be careful shitting too much on the religious elements of the album. Trashing gospel as a whole is absolutely a bad look and, especially if you're ignorant to that entire culture, pretty problematic. This is not a bad album because Kanye uses gospel elements or talks about God. It is a bad album because it was rushed, is sloppy and has the Chick Fil A song on it.
(to me personally, Yeezus and Pablo are not only peak Kanye, but peak music, but I still thought that tweet was hilarious)
i think people are trashing this because it’s bad and rushed but most people participating in this conversation in other places are not necessarily articulating it well and instead using religion as an easy scapegoat. this album sucks because it’s bad.
just as many people will be called stans for praising the album a lot of the people calling it shit are doing it for the sake hating on it cause it's a new Kanye album. it's painfully obvious.
Like, in here, you mean? I don't think anyone is using religion as a scapegoat. If anything, the people who are into it and denying the idea that it's a "gospel" record are saying more problematic shit. I did lol that you are saying that other people are not articulating their thoughts for the album well and then end your quote with "this album sucks because it’s bad." EDIT: Ah, didn't catch in other places at first.
I like plenty of religious music. I like Kirk Franklin a lot and Chance doesn’t grate on me when he talks about god. It might more be that I don’t trust Kanye’s version of Christianity. Maybe that sounds harsh. But he seems to have embraced a very conservative, puritanical idea of what it means to spread his faith and I’m concerned about that messaging. that being said I haven’t listened to the record and am going by what I’ve seen as he’s been in the press leading up to it. From what people have told me about the lyrics on the album it sounds more boring than anything.
