his stuff is good to run to so i’ll throw an album on occasionally for that but i haven’t otherwise just at home or whatever in years

Yeah I was big into damn when it came out but probably haven’t listened to any of his albums in 3 or so years.

It’s not that there is anything wrong with it, but it was a prominent (maybe the most prominent in recent history) example of this:

TPAB was also kind of like that. Kendrick just seems to have that effect. That’s not his fault though. He himself seems very aware of the tradition he is in.

EDIT: This does not mean they aren’t great or whatever so don’t even start with me.

I used to listen to a lot of hip hop when GKMC came out and it was definitely my favorite (and remains to this day)

    I didn't understand TPAB :/

As far as Kanye goes I listen to him for entirely different reasons than why I listen to rap.

Feel like GKMC is best and College Dropout is best are opinions with a lot of overlap, no?

Yeah it was more the people who liked it, not the album itself. Although I do find that Kendrick can get grating/annoying on songs and he does it a lot on GK

v possible, referring back to the 'if you don't rate the first two highest you don't like hip hop' that started the whole thing off

That’s not what this is about. I think the original point was that people that don’t like Kanye’s old albums haven’t listened to enough Hip Hop and therefore might think that GKMC is somehow genre defining rather than an album that fits within a rich tradition of similar albums (which also goes for TPAB). But it wasn’t aimed at anyone particular. We were just talking shit really lol

But those people definitely exist, a lot of them are music writers too lol

i do remember the white rapper dude from ap.net (kyle? i think?) wrote me like a novel on fb messenger about the meaning of each song on GKMC lol. very 2013 type shit.

i like kenny but the reddit nature type stuff of his fanbase puts me off of a lot of his stuff. like the whole “there will be a sister album to damn!!! see the signs, sheeple!” shit was so annoying

People just wanna crown shit instant classics the day an album drops

That is part of it but he really did make it at a time in which a lot of new people (not as in young, as in people who only listened to rock before) came to the genre (often due to post-Graduation Kanye, to circle back around) and they started throwing that stuff around a lot without doing their homework. That might sound like some old head shit but it is true lol

throwing out a very half baked take but there is so much music and such ease of getting it these days + the speed at which the pop culture dialogue moves makes me honestly kind of understand the instant classic phenomenon completely and think it arguably worth defending

To be fair that album is very good. It was definitely a bit overhyped at times (looking at you Pitchfork), but I do think that one deserved most of the praise it got, personally.
