Jake I don't want to go down this avenue with you, but realize I was a chronic relapser myself. BIG TIME. I went through absolute hell before I got sober and it completely defines who I am as a person today.

You shouldn't post on this site if it is effecting you like it is. Years ago I had to stop posting on AP until I did a lot of work on myself and then when I felt ready it happened to be just when Chorus started and I was just over a year sober.

You know I am open to talking to you about this stuff in private, I have plenty of views on it from my own experience. Of course I wouldn't want to talk about it right here.

I gave you a good reason, to increase awareness. In fact I used the same logic you applied to your approach. Actually mine was an order of magnitude higher in percentage.

Do you think that a one sized fits all sticker on a thread is more valuable than direct conversation?

The issue with the tag, like @OhTheWater mentioned, is where do you draw the line? Do you put the tag on a Hovvdy or Skullcrusher or Buck Meek thread for touring (or having planned to) with Pinegrove? Do you put it on The Front Bottoms thread where the current members aren’t abusers themselves but handled a situation involving a former member being an abuser improperly? There isn’t a clear line over who would be deemed “problematic” and who would not and there would be too much arguing over who gets the tag instead of directly discussing problematic artists and accountability.

  5. If listening is okay but posting positively about what you're listening to without a disclaimer isn't it seems like the problem comes down to whether you trust the community at large to be able to hold two ideas in their head at once and have a nuanced understanding of their own relationship to pop culture. If you don't trust them to do that it's kind of strange to engage at all. What do you hope to gain by interacting with people who's critical thinking abilities you have such a low opinion of?

Yes. It doesn’t have the capacity to antagonize on a personal level and it relieves some of the burden on posters such as yourself.

I simply disagree, then. A tag would do much more harm than it would good, and it won’t take away any of the stupid shit that happened in here

    Here's what you do:

    -Listen
    -Post positively about the music
-Don't quote or respond to Anthony's view that he is entitled to
-Move on with your fucking life

I guess users will just have to take stock of how they engage with people on these issues then.

Well yeah, haha. That’s been a topic of conversation forever on here

He’s entitled to his views and people are entitled to respond to his views. If I post something I post it fully aware that anyone can respond and engage with said view, just as I am free to post whatever it is I am posting.

  12. I think people should be more mindful of everyone’s mental health before posting. Regardless of what “side” you’re on.

It’s fucked that I’m the one being told I should leave and not the ridiculously toxic users that endless people have complained about because they refuse to acknowledge the harm they’ve caused and brush it off in the same way every single time. It was just weird to see you give them cover while not even acknowledging why I’m upset but whatever

idk man if I made someone feel that way I'd apologize, but what do I know

here's an idea: "shit man, I really don't like this kanye guy, he's done some heinous shit, but dog I really didn't mean to hurt your feelings. sorry about that!"

I deeply regret saying anything and debated all night whether I even would. Thanks to the people who care and reached out and as always to the people who don’t I’m sorry you feel whatever way you feel about me and what I’ve posted. Now I’m really leaving, this thread for sure and most of the rest of the site besides like the sports forum I guess but seeing as this all started because of me if y’all could just drop it that would be cool I don’t want to be blamed for kicking off whatever the fuck is going on now, I just want to have some peace the rest of my day. That’s all.

  16. yep that is how you react to stupid shit people post, for sure. my question was what is the point of posting it in the first place. the worry is obviously not preventing Kanye from being popular. it's not spreading awareness, because everyone knows and everyone knows everyone knows. it's not keeping money out of his pocket. it's not introducing people to the idea of critical listening - if you're posting like that you don't have confidence in people to do that like I said. I don't want to accuse anyone of anything but other than those its hard to find reasons other than "it makes me feel better" or "I want to make you all feel bad." open to other answers.

  17. to be clear when we're talking about "Anthony's view" we're not talking about "Kanye has said and done some stupid and fucked up shit" it's "Your posting positively about his music is harmful in some way that listening isn't"

It really sucks that a valued member of this community is being driven off this website because certain members (or I guess a certain member) don’t know how to not be condescending, shaming others, etc. and won’t apologize when called out for it, even when their words have directly impacted those peoples reasons for leaving this website.

I just wish people could realize when they’re being too harsh and when their words are harming others and in turn learn and be less harsh in the future.

A lot of us in this thread care about you @sophos34 and you will definitely be missed! Take care of yourself and know you are welcome back here any time you feel comfortable.

I almost never engage in things like this, but this is Jake's like 15th time "leaving" the website and I'm just wondering at what point do we stop with the "we'll miss you" and "stay healthy" platitudes and actually do something about it?

I mean, yeah, but this feels weird and disingenuous, when I believe the reason Anthony posts like he does in here is because of the notion that posting positively about Kanye will harm members of the community here (or at large), yet when a member of this community is harmed by the approach, the response is "well, just brush it off and move on" - feels, at best, like having it both ways, and at worst like a callous disregard for the intended initial intent.

    Okay, I'm done.

There’s a difference between a) pointing out to people that someone they might like or listen to is problematic and then letting them do with that information what they feel is right and b) being an annoying, borderline toxic asshole about it. We all know the difference. The former doesn’t lead to bad shit like this, the latter often does. It’s not that deep.

I don’t block people that do the former ever. I sometimes block people that do the latter. Not because they make me feel guilty. I both really don’t feel guilty (I’m very comfortable about the the lines I draw myself) and don’t mind criticism. I block them because I want my life to be free of annoying assholes.
