I’m sure this has been discussed but would it be possible to implement some sort of notification and/or icon that activates when a thread is tagged as being about a problematic artist? Preferably with a link or description of why it’s tagged?

I guess it’d be kind of hard to manage though

A little badge on the thread title in the forum view could do the trick. Then it's obvious.

How do we decide what artists receive the tag? Is the purpose for education? A reminder? Won’t most people ignore it after seeing it 9-10 times? Direct conversation, imo, seems more effective

wow I truly wish I was dead what a great feeling to have on my birthday. seems some people still don’t get it and would rather talk in circles about the same things for the millionth time than try and talk to me about anything ive ever said in how this all makes me feel and contributes to my mental decline over and over again. I mean I already know who discredits my existence and what I suffer from outright it’s not hard to tell plus people talk shit and I end up hearing about it all the time but damn we’re really just gonna do this again and again and again, I regret even bothering to bring up that I was fed up with being made to feel like shit over something I don’t think even matters, shoulda just shut my mouth and left without coming back to check on the website. now I regret doing so and my day is ruined. so it goes

I think direct conversation can be very beneficial, so long as you aren’t being extremely antagonistic, shameful, going too hard when it’s not necessary, and directly affecting people’s mental health on here.

I already had therapy today, it’s embarrassing I had to talk about a Kanye thread on a tiny music website

How many times does it need to be shown that the direct conversation approach taken by some has a negative impact, despite the intentions? Why are you so quick to shoot down additional solutions?

Nothing is ever too embarrassing if it is affecting your mental health. Happy you had an opportunity to talk about it with them.

I'm not quick about anything, lol. I've been having this discussion for like 5 years now, almost since the site began. What purpose does a "problematic" tag serve? The people who ignore the direct discussion will very easily ignore a sticker on the forum page. People who want to be antagonistic or to disrupt the thread will still be able to do that. What does it solve aside from causing a site wide argument over which artists should get the sticker and which shouldn't?

A Chorus classic. I remember getting shit on once because I said I didn’t wish death on a problematic rapper that was killed.

The direct conversation/disruption tactic is 1000% the way to go, so long as you aren't a huge dickhead about it. I can trash Kanye all I want and still recognize that people on this site are not pieces of shit for listening to the album/talking about it. It's very easy to do. It's very easy to compartmentalize my anger and frustration with Kanye and not take it out on someone I've had a relationship with online for over a decade because they were curious about the most popular musician in like 40 years.

If the goal is to inform users about problematic artists then a visual cue could have a %.00001 chance of getting someone to take a closer look, instead of relying on users to interject at undefined times in the thread to give the same information.

I really can't speak to that. Is the moderation here truly non-existent?

Should The Wonder Years have a tag on their thread? Should The Menzingers? Should Hovvdy because they were announced to tour with Pinegrove pre-pandemic? Or can we post the news as it happens in the thread and then have a discussion about it?

It's not an either or, is it? A badge would like be the result of discussion in the thread.

Decided by whom, though? Staff? A vote by users? What happens if someone firmly wants a “tag” but the vast majority of users disagree. Is Kanye’s tag different than that of Pinegrove’s?

I just don’t see what the tag accomplishes that discussion does not, so long as discussion is civil

extremely disappointing to see this mentality come from you. you know every time I relapse someone in my circle tells me if I feel guilt or shame it’s because I deserve to? aint that fucked up?

but what the fuck are we really talking about here? the issues that these artists get called out on for being problematic run so much deeper than any one individual listener that it’s absurd to go out of your way to try and make anyone that listens to a problematic artist feel bad about doing so. and people keeping bringing up for some reason it’s unique I still listen to Kanye because if it was some random pop punk band I’d be down the throats of people who listen to them. Which is false. I listen to a lot of pop punk bands that this website has deemed problematic to listen to, I just don’t go around vocalizing it because those people are gonna come after me in a way that I literally do not need in my life right now with everything going on and everything I’ve been through. If listening to some band brings me some level of comfort for whatever reason then I’m gonna do that regardless of what some faceless person on a tiny music forum thinks of me or that band. I know what I believe I and I know what matters to me. I don’t feel guilty for a second just because someone goes out of their way to make me feel that way. I just don’t understand what is ever gained from purposefully driving the emotion of shame into another human being over things largely out of our control. Because like I said these issues are so much deeper than any one person. If someone drives a car instead of walking to work are you making them feel guilty for contributing to the climate crisis? Probably not because the issue runs so much deeper than that. It’s structural. It’s the same concept here. I’m not defending the actions of any problematic artist I listen to, I know who did what wrong and why. I’m still gonna listen to what I listen to and I won’t be made to feel guilty about it by people who don’t actually know me.

I could not have said it better myself. So many of those comments that disrupt a thread just to point out how awful someone is for listening to an artist feel more about being self-congratulatory to me. I hope you do stay, sophos, but if you need time away I wish you the absolute best. You deserve to take care of yourself.

I think it would be up to a mod.

Clearly your preferred approach has issues as the discussions do not remain civil (or start out that way in many cases), so maybe it’s productive to spend more than five minutes thinking about and discussing other ways to go about it instead of repeatedly saying “I think my approach is best”.

Why is this the second time you’ve insinuated that I haven’t thought of this before? I’m just pointing out the inevitable problems with a tag, and I’ve yet to hear a good reason for why we’d adopt one
