I don’t disagree that blocking people is helpful but I also think calling out users who are too aggressive/harsh when they don’t need to be is important too, because blocking said users helps personally but doesn’t solve the issue at hand, and this keeps happening what seems like time and time again and will likely continue because others don’t block/choose to engage.

  2. Calling out users on this website isn’t going to change how they act or think.

Block them if you don’t like what they’re saying and move on

I agree with this philosophy, but rarely does this amount to changed behavior on Chorus haha

  4. We have this same discourse in every thread on this site with problematic shit heads.

Do I think if this was anyone other than Kanye that this wouldn't be happening? Sure do.

Am I gonna patrol here and tell people "DONT YOU DARE LISTEN" nah. Because I will listen to this when it drops. Maybe it is really good. Maybe I will listen to it a couple times.

Is Kanye still an absolute shit brain? Absolutely. Don't forget that when listening.

Are y'all messaging other people privately and attacking them for listening to a livestream? Jesus - you can literally go and do anything else.

  6. Problem is, this should be a two-way street and it's not. I'm all for shitting on Kanye -- truly couldn't care less -- but I don't think it's right to hop into a thread to shame users for something they didn't do, make them want to leave the website (or worse!), and then ironically disappear in the name of accountability. As someone who cares about accountability, it's not only performative, it's actively harmful.

It's always been listen to whatever the hell you want in private, I've been saying that for years and so have tons of other people. I'm not going over that again for the millionth goddamn time. Listen to whatever you want in the privacy of your own headphones.

The effusive public praise for someone as actively harmful as Kanye West doesn't sit right with me, especially coming from people who ostensibly care about accountability (or at least claim to).

When it's a generic artist nobody gives a shit about, it's always "the quality of the music shouldn't matter" and all that. Because it shouldn't! There comes a time when the music, good or bad, is irrelevant and not what should be discussed whenever the person's name pops up. But when it's someone like Kanye, who we all used to respect and love a great deal, suddenly it's "well you have to separate the art from the artist" or whatever.

It doesn't sit right with me and I'm going to say so. I haven't attacked anyone individually, I'm making general statements. If you don't like it, the block button is your friend.

    Enjoy Donda

It’s still fuck Kanye for his dumb, harmful shit, but this is more nuanced than comparing it to a pop punk abuser. Attempting to make it a 1:1 doesn’t work here

  10. But what can we/anyone do? The people on side a are gonna do what they've always done and the people on side b are gonna do what they've always done.

People's suggested a million and one things for threads exactly like this one (or any thread that is based around an artist that is largely problematic) and the reality is, there's not a solution. You can put a large red disclaimer on every thread like that and it won't change anything.

People are gonna aggressively shit on threads like this (and I can understand) and people are gonna disagree with how they handle that and think that it's harmful (and I can understand that too)

Do I think we should shame people super hard for what they listen to? No. If I posted my last.fm right now, someone would yell at me to be 'cancelled' because two of the last three things in there is Brand New and Better Off.

I think there's a lot of performative accountability on this website (and the internet) from a large, large majority of people. And it is harmful. But there's no better solution than to block people here. Because there's no fix unfortunately.

You're right, given the size and influence of Kanye's platform he's been harmful with his words and actions on a scale that an independent pop-punk band could never be

Imagine being so proud of yourself for calling out Kanye West that you breeze right on by someone saying that your actions are affecting their mental health in a way that may be putting their own safety and life in jeopardy, just "lol"ing that you'll never go away, somehow convinced that your posts here will affect Kanye in some way (I guess, or why else bother?) while callously ignoring the weight your actions carry right here and now on people you can, and are, affecting. Imagine.

I…find this to be a pretty dumb point lol. Why are you even attempting to compare the levels of harmfulness? Seems insensitve to survivors of the “independent pop punk bands” to diminish their harm

My point was about levels of exposure and notoriety of the artist, not the kinds of harm they caused.

Writing snarky posts on the Internet is not activism or allyship.

Performatively shaming people for listening to music is not activism or allyship.

Before hitting that "post reply" button, ask yourself whether what you've written is going to actively contribute to the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable and marginalised people.

    This has become pure comedy.

One of the most popular artists of our time is previewing their new album for the world to hear in real time. The world is going to listen.

I don't have time to be angry that people clicked an apple music link and spent their time watching out of interest or curiosity.

God forbid people forget about our hellscape for an hour.

I just said I don't give a shit whether people listen or not, it's the three pages of "holy shit this is so good" comments that rubbed me the wrong way. But yeah keep beating up that strawman.

People are going to listen and post their thoughts on the album, positive or negative. Not sure what else you’d expect. I don’t think the people saying it’s good are also defending his past actions/words.

My post history over the last several years is full of times where this exact same scenario has happened over and over again and I've had to explain my position on private listening vs. public praise. Not getting into it again, just know you're wrong.

I'm just thinking you may need to take a step back and evaluate how your actions can affect others you interact with, cause you seem to have this kind of weird connection here where people listening to artists you've deemed problematic are deeply problematic people themselves, whereas your posts over the matter are degrading people's mental health in the here and now, but you don't seem to care. Sure, the block button is there, but you've already did what you did. Personally, I'd take stock of that and maybe re-evaluate if what I was doing was useful or even positive, but then again, I'm just me. You'll do what you choose.
