  1. Definitely. I think it's interesting that he's back to swearing and, based on last night, relatively secular music. I wonder if that's to try and retain the audience he has left.

Even if he does attempt to walk this back, he's beyond deep in it. I can't even begin to comprehend what that kind of character shift would look like, and I also wouldn't believe the man. We've all observed his persona shift over time, but this *version* of Kanye feels foreign and removed from any iteration of his personality. With one caveat, he has never been fearful of consequence or being held accountable.

As for the past reports of Mein Kampf readings and praising Hitler (all of which to my knowledge was behind closed doors). At best (to be clear, still awful), its edgelord 4chan bullshit. At worst, he's always held these views. Even since then, general openness of hate feels louder than ever before. Surrounding himself with Alex Jones, Nick Fuentes, and others.. perhaps he went further down the rabbit hole. It is also clear that far-right figures used Kanye to further their own agenda.

If there's any humor to be found, it's that even Kanye West isn't far removed from being susceptible to sounding like a conspiracy nut on Facebook or other corners of the internet.

I remember that quote from an interview with Zane Lowe, "I've run my Truman Show boat into the painting." That has since taken on new meaning.

Would love to read the book you write about this wild ride.

  3. I have so many questions about this. Is it being independently released?

Nice to see Pitchfork not posting a news story about it, though

The only time he ever really apologized was after the Taylor Swift/VMA situation and even then, Leno kind of manipulated an apology out of him. But he did kind of take stock of his career, laid low and went to Hawaii to record MBTDF.

Once he figured he could always flip it to make himself the victim of any stupid action he said or did, it was over. He knew he could get away with anything. And since he’s always gonna be surrounded by yes men, nothing’s gonna change.

The only thing that can really hurt him is people don’t play his songs or pay attention to him. He’s already hit the bottom of the barrel with Nazi sympathies and blaming blacks for slavery. Can’t get any lower. It’s just a matter of what artists we respect that are willing to go that low for clout.

The bigger question I still ask from time to time is how much of the past six years he actually, truly believes (most of it), how much of it he calculated for publicity or controversy's sake (probably some of it), and whether he knows the difference anymore.

Not to sound all conspiracy nut but the really scary thing is Kanye is clearly someone that dark alt-right figures with deep pockets have gotten a hold of. Those lunatics needed someone "cool" like Kanye to help the misinformed get on board with their fascist ideas.

Obviously Kanye has always said crazy things but this pivot tells me there's powerful creeps that have his ear

    Not newbie, I think Supporter

As someone who goes through manic episodes and whatnot, I usually have to come down on an apology tour afterwards. Shake my head, and be in disbelief about the things I thought. Then move on and reset. Kanye's narcissism doesn't seem to allow him to do this so he goes with "it must be true because I thought it" then continues to dig deeper into it.

No one knows the true depth of his mental health and how he does or doesn't take care of it but it's clear he has not handled fame, illness or himself well. It sucks, he could have really been an inspiration for a generation and instead he's just a whacko.

The album cover is the most blatant Burzum rip ever, more than the cover that was going around earlier.

  17. Also hate to be a bummer but Fred Again played a snippet of his track during one of his shows, so unfortunately it's recent involvement. (James Blake, I'm unsure.)

splice that post with the video of kanye screaming at him "this is why your album flopped. sit down and listen to the album or leave."
