the good songs on here are real good (justified, breadwinner, cherry blossom, camera roll) but the stinky ones are stinky
i like justified but think its silly that it was marketed as a concept album when it's mostly just a collection of songs. the post golden hour pressure was silly.
I'm in agreement with the majority that this was a bad misstep. However, I think it was an important swing and miss, since Deeper Well was an excellent release and felt like a very conscious "be yourself" pivot from star crossed
that's interesting, i've always felt like the album was completely disjointed sonically. never considered it in terms of a three act structure but i assume act 2 would start with justified? couldn't guess where act 3 starts.
the narrative splits pretty cleanly into five-track segments: act 1- i did my best in this marriage but it wasn't good enough act 2- i need to try some other things to cope, what does that feel like act 3 - i haven't figured out what I want, but I'll have to stay positive and rely on myself I guess tracks 11-15 aren't as clearly locked together sonically, but they move from the muted acoustics into swirling ascension in a way that makes sense as an arc.
I actually still like it quite a bit. It's not her best but there's some songs on this album that have remained my favorites. Deeper Well is everything I wanted from her but this album is definitely not as bad as it was received.
