The title track is such an awesome way to start this album. I loved it anyway, but it really works well in context.
Disagree, if only because the singles on Red were pure pop songs that Taylor would push further on 1989 whereas nearly every song on here could’ve fit in sonically with the pop moments of Golden Hour (minus the lyrical themes obviously). I would like to clarify for whoever is misinterpreting my earlier post that I am not claiming that this is as good as Red. It’s a comparison based on the intention of the record’s musical choices and how well they were pulled off.
"I Knew You Were Trouble" is really the only song on Red that I'd call "pure pop," personally. "22" is extremely pop-country, and "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and "Red" had country radio versions that...mostly sounded the same as the originals. Idk, I've always felt like the "Red is actually when Taylor went pop" narrative was a little overstated; I think that album sounds way more like Speak Now than it does 1989.
I've never seen that word before today, but I've now seen it applied to this album and Prefab Sprout.
Anyone order this on vinyl from her site/get their record yet? I've seen a few people online who got theirs today or yesterday, but I don't even think mine has shipped...
Man, pop is having a downbeat moment this year, huh? I like this album for sure though. The chorus of Good Wife is excellent and I was very entertained both by the flute solo and the discourse around it.
I talked about this recently in the Lorde thread, but yeah it's a verrrrry downbeat year for pop. Which is understandable considering the state of the world right now and when all these albums were being made, but yeah it's very apparent when all the biggest pop albums of the year are much more somber and downbeat
mine is en route and in Indianapolis right now, says should be here Wednesday but I’m thinking Monday hopefully
