I haven't watched the doc, and that buzzfeed article doesn't really explain, but what's the story here? From what I can gather in that article, Britney cheated on Justin, Justin launched his career with Cry Me A River video w/ Britney lookaline, Justin was crude about her on air in an interview, yeah?

I just watched the doc & those tweets sum up the flavor of their take on that section of her history. That whole era of her life looks real gross in retrospect, less because of her, & more because of the type of behavior that society obsessed about & tolerated.

Not to detract too much from the point but he already had a relative hit “With Like I Love You”

Yeah, pretty much. Personally I feel like yes, he shouldn't have done those things and in retrospect he definitely seems like he was an immature prick at that time. That being said, the fact that they seem to be on good terms nowadays and she's forgiven him leads me to think he has likely grown a lot as a person in the past... 20 years. I think it's easy to lose sight of both how long ago that was and how young they both were, obviously that's not an excuse but I do think if he's changed since then, it's worth examining still but not necessarily worth condemning him in the present over. Just my two cents.

I think it's fair to critique, and I haven't dug at all to see if he has addressed that time of his life at all. If he hasn't, then yes it'd be nice to hear him reflect on it after this documentary and condemn his past self.

Yeah this is kind of where I'm at. I'd LIKE to think he's at a point where he could be self-critical of his past actions in that way, and if he does do that I think that would be a positive step. So here's to hoping...

If the narrative around Britney and her virginity wasn't so public would JT have spoken like that when asked about their relationship? Either way "Cry Me A River" would have happened.

Justin's mention in the doc is cursory but it basically broke down how he used Britney's fame as a springboard for his solo career. That magazine cover is only one example, but bragging about taking Britney's virginity is what allowed him to rebrand from being a boy band singer to a pop star that straight guys could admit to listening to in 2004. It wasn't the last time he threw a woman under the bus in the name of his own career, either. Janet Jackson went on an apology tour after her performance with him, her career suffered for years, and he let her take the full brunt of the undeserved blowback while his career went unscathed. A quick Google search tells me he claims to have apologized personally to Janet but the only quote I found from her says he never made amends.

Obviously these are incidents from years ago, but the ways he's reacted when people bring them up and try to hold him to account more recently have been telling, to me at least.

edit: actually while i'm here, this just popped up on my twitter feed, so we can add this to shit he has not apologized for

I watched the doc a few nights ago. It was really disgusting when they would cut to interviews of her 20 years ago on seemingly professional/reputable media outlets, and the interviewers would get all serious and be like "we need to speak about your breasts," or "talk to us about your virginity."
At the same time, and not to defend JT at all, he was doing interviews and every single interviewer would ask "we need to talk about Britney's virginity." If you search youtube theres like a 10 minute video of clips of interviewers pressing him about her.
It just goes to show how disgusting the media was back then and how privileged they thought they were to the personal lives of these kids. Media can still get pretty bad these days, but no way in hell is Billie Eilish or Olivia Rodrigo gonna get pressured into talking about their sex lives on live tv.

Yeah, the media ecosystem was absolutely the biggest problem back then. There was a big thread on Twitter the other day highlighting some of the insanely sexist, cruel shit that people wrote for major publications under the guise of "celebrity profiles."

    Probably.

Also Justin could’ve refused to answer or had his publicist step in. Media is obviously the big villain here but he has no excuse. Was talking the other day about how Wilmer Valderrama did something similar to Mandy Moore. Dudes have no problem embarrassing or violating women to seem cool
