Great idea. Would be interesting to see a Steven Hyden or Chuck Klosterman look at this. Maybe others?

hyden and klosterman are maybe last on the list of writers I would want to write about that lmao

    Constructive comment. Thanks

I don't necessarily think that critics whose main beat is spreading the gospel of the mainly white guitar bands are who I would want to read on appropriation and translation of black masculinity re: male teen pop stars nor the subjects that have been discussed on the past few pages of the thread

None of the work I've read by them would make them my first choice to write on that subject matter is all

tbf I also am not particularly enamored by either of their writing in general

Fair points, but I don't know any other authors who work in this space.
    Got any others in mind?

Oliver Wang would do an amazing job I'd bet. He's a veteran hip hop and music writer and a sociology professor. He wrote "Legions Of Boom: Filipino American Mobile DJ Crews in the San Francisco Bay Area", which is amazing.

    Legions of Boom

    --

Another book that isn't about that specific subject but about the broadening of hip hop music and culture, about how hip hop shaped mainstream Western music and culture, and about how hip hop is being incorporated into various things (advertising, pop music and so on) both authentically and inauthentically:

The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy: Steve Stoute, Mim Eichler Rivas: 9781592407385: Amazon.com: Books

It's very good. It's not a "music book" though.

Im a Christina Aguilera fan and she made this song to give homage to the artists who came before and who influenced her sound which I always appreciated

But tbh if someone accuses her (or any artist) of appropriation (and xtina def deserves to be) I think it's important the artist just shuts up and listen. You can genuinely care and love a genre, you can make a song dedicated to ur love of it, and poc can still feel salty that ur profiting off of it while many artists of color will never break out with that success. I think artists have to just accept that and acknowledge it. When they get all defensive and talk down to the poc criticizing them that's a big misstep and red flag. If u rly love and understand a genre I think u will understand the dynamics at play and navigate accordingly.

So honestly, Man of the Woods wore off for me a *little* bit. I still really like it, but there are several tracks I usually skip now which definitely puts it below his best for me.

    As far as ranking... FS/LS > 20/20 Pt. 1 > Justified > Man of the Woods > 20/20 Pt. 2

I used to have a weird mentality towards Justified where I’d really underrate that album lol, sometimes I’d even put it below 20/20 Pt. 2. My thinking was, “If you put aside Cry Me A River, Rock Your Body, Like I Love You, and Senorita, the album doesn’t have as many of JT’s best songs”...

Then I realized that even though those are the singles and that is an argument that can be made... all four of those rank VERY high in my favorite songs by him haha. And the album also has a lot of other great underrated gems.

Anyway random tangeant, point is that’s why it’s above MOTW for me.

I mean it's obviously better, I'd listen to Justified 10 times before I'll listen to MOTW once.

I heard like 4 different songs from 20/20 part 1 at the mall yesterday and that was wild.

I would always rank Justified last just because I hated that the title was a pun.
But looking back it actually is a pretty solid record.

I'd say about half of Justified holds up still, no need to hear songs like Last Night and Let's Take a Ride again

I actually only ever listened to Justified for the first time a few weeks back, didn't really care for much of the non-singles

I finally got around to listening to this and there were really only a few songs I wasn't into, I enjoyed it a lot. Not anywhere near his best work but nowhere near deserving of the vitriol it's getting

If I had to rank I'd probably go

    FS/LS>20/20 pt 1> 20/20 pt 2>MOTW>Justified

I really have never been able to get into the debut outside of the singles

watched JT's performance at the Brit Awards last night. can't find a video as they've all been taken down but I thought it was fantastic.

he did Midnight Summer Jam and Say Something with CS.

woke up to look for the video and found nothing but negative reviews again.

All the Brits 2018 performances ranked, worst to best

I thought almost every performance last night was lackluster, including his - it was a good performance, but after seeing the La Blogotheque version of "Say Something' every other performance pales in comparison unfortunately. It suffers live from what the album suffers from, refrains or "hooks" being too long and making me enjoy it and then bored in all the time it's played.
