the video depicting a near twin of britney was pretty uncalled for though

Gotta give it to Timberlake, it took a lot longer for mainstream opinion to turn on him than most pop stars

Haven't heard this album yet though

    I do not exist.

I might be forgetting something but I can’t remember any criticism of these aspects of JT’s life over at ap.net when 20/20 pt1 came out. There was almost universal excitement.

Interesting how the climate has changed.

Obviously the Woody Allen stuff was more recent. When did the Prince ‘feud’ happen? Anyway, I only remember talking about how good the album was - and then even when pt2 failed to live up to expectations there wasn’t this kind of analysis.

Not saying it’s right or wrong - just making an observation after seeing the comment above about it taking a long time for opinion to turn against him.

Yea I read some of that 3.8 pitchfork review and some of the criticisms are talking stuff about Futuresex and 20/20 part 1 and it's like, alright you certainly weren't feeling that way back then with those albums

Not that criticism towards him is undeserved in any way but when it comes to backtracking on albums that were previously pretty praised it's like hmmmm

Really? Is it the same writer who reviewed 20/20 and future sex? No? Then how do you know they weren't feeling that way? And if they were so fucking what? Opinions on music are allowed to change over time

This thread is fucking awful I'm out y'all are killing legitimate discourse with this shit

"Man of the Woods is a misstep large enough to merit relitigating Justin Timberlake’s status as a pop superstar. How much of his career should we chalk up to fortune, privilege, and an essential malleability?"

I respect the reviewer's opinion... but to me this comes off as incredibly hyperbolic and ridiculous. Maybe it's just my opinion, but if an artist's previous albums are good, it'd be pretty hard for ANY future work to retroactively make me think less of their old work... and I certainly don't think that's the case here. I just think that's a ridiculous argument, but to each their own.

Anyway, even though I like a lot of this album... "Act like the South ain't the shit" is a pretty god-awful opening line. Ngl I got pretty worried the first time I heard that intro.

20/20 is definitely the best album by JT. The whole release/visuals were spot on in my opinion but FutureSex is definitely a close second for me. 20/20 part 2 didn’t have the same appeal.

I'll have to watch it again but yeah it just felt so boring.

I also understand artists have to medleys but dang dude tried to cram way to many songs into that.

Yea it was....perfectly adequate. Definitely one of the least memorable half time shows in many years. Song medleys can work great so I wouldn't put that on the medley itself, just Justin and co. not really doing it particularly well.
