Not gonna lie the Prince thing rubs me the wrong way, but mostly because I’m opposed to holograms of decreased artiste generally. The alleged “feud” is something I think was likely overblown, yes Prince did make a joke about SexyBack, but I think it’s debatable whether or not Justin’s “diss track” was specifically responding to Prince or just a general brag, or about someone else. Considering all the times he’s praised Prince as a huge inspiration for his music, I tend to think it wasn’t aimed at him.

Prince may not have liked him (although I think even that is flimsy as far as whether or not we know for SURE), but generally I don’t like making assumptions like that based on weak evidence.

It is a good list, and a clickbait headline.

Well I think by definition, unless you’re boycotting every single actor and actress who has worked with Woody Allen equally, you are “picking and choosing your outrage”. Which is only logical, it’s difficult to be aware of EVERY person in Hollywood, or entertainment generally, who has worked with shitty people like Woody Allen in some capacity.

But by that same token, I’d argue that if other well-known celebrities aren’t getting called out as frequently for their association with Allen, and the focus is only on JT because he has a new album out, then yeah I’d argue that’s intentionally selective.

I mean, I think there's been at least five actors associated with his recent movies that have publicly denounced him and/or donated profits from being in his movies in the last couple months so I'd say people are pretty frequently being called out about it and the attitude towards Allen has shifted pretty drastically as of late. I'm not necessarily saying JT should be raked through the coals over it, I think people saying it's weird or unfair is diametrically opposed to the overall tone of the forum. I don't think people have to stop listening to him on the basis of him being problematic, but it's not like it's above being discussed either.

That’s fair. It’s definitely worth discussing, and it’s a good thing the public’s stance towards Woody Allen is finally changing.

Ever since the first album teaser came out, I keep thinking about how cool it would be if JT released something like Bon Iver's 22, A Million. Thinking about that release with more pop sensibilities worked in gets me excited...and I love that record as it is.

By a random stroke of luck, I started my first listen of this record at Flannel and then followed the sequence from there. I can safely say that the back half of the record is the only thing that will stick for me. In general, its a pretty average release for me and the low points are really low.

That said, the best way to trim this down is as follows:
    • Filthy
    • Midnight Summer Jam
    • Morning Light (feat. Alicia Keys)
    • Say Something (feat. Chris Stapleton)
    • Hers (Interlude)
    • Flannel
    • Montana
    • Breeze Off The Pond
    • Livin’ Off The Land
    • The Hard Stuff
    • Young Man

Ironic, because if Justin hasn't been an essential pop star in years, lord knows Britney hasn't been for even longer

maybe because justin used to run his mouth in the media shit talking her which stalled out her career while he capitalized on their split with cry me a river's music video

If you're going by the New York Times review, the writer is arguing that being relevant (or "essential" in their words) as a pop star is defined by their ability to remain artistically forward-thinking and continue to make cutting-edge, quality music... basically saying that FS/LS was the last time Justin did those things.

I was arguing that if you're using the writer's definition of "essential", Britney also stopped being essential around that time. Nothing to do with commercial performance. I haven't heard that whole Britney album but the song with G-Eazy is terrible and desperate trend-hopping... And the song she did with Iggy Azalea may be, no hyperbole, one of the worst songs I've heard in my life.

I was honestly too young at the time, I was under the impression that Cry Me A River was more or less his main response to her allegedly cheating on him... but if he bashed her in interviews that's lame. Celebrity breakups often aren't a good look for either side, and I think there were a lot of other reasons Britney fell off somewhat that have nothing to do with that. Wasn't trying to bash Britney as I do like her old stuff, I just thought the photo/quote pairing was ironic.

River gets a pass for being his best song by far. He coulda dropped that and retired

That one time Brit talked about CMAR to Rolling Stone was one of my favorite things ever:

Did you call him up or say anything to him?

Well, actually, [laughs] he called [laughs]. I'm gonna break it down right now, OK? You want the scoop, you want the truth? Here it is. He called me up and asked me if it was OK. I can't believe I'm telling you this right now. But who cares. He called me up and wanted to supposedly get back together or whatever, but behind it was, "And by the way, you're in a video that's coming out." That kind of got slipped in. "Don't worry about it. It's not a big deal." So the record label called and said, "If you want to change this, you can." I had the power to say no to the video. But I didn't, because I thought, "Hey, it's your video."

    Had you seen it?

I hadn't seen it. Then it came out, and I said, "I should've freakin' said no to this shit!" I was so like, "Whoa. What is going on right now?" But, hey. And I said, "Why did you do this?" He goes, 'Well, I got a controversial video." And I was like, "You did. [Claps her hands, as if for a dog that just performed a trick.] Yay for you." So he got what he wanted. [Clears throat] I think it looks like such a desperate attempt, personally. But that was a great way to sell the record. He's smart [laughs]. Smart guy.

The [Claps her hands, as if for a dog that just performed a trick] part kills me lol
