Yeah I remember going back to 20/20 pt 1 after MOTW and being genuinely surprised how well it held up. Still goes.

 

20/20 Pt 1 absolutely holds up as fucking fantastic, still a GREAT album. Aside from 1-2 tracks, Part 2 has a ton of strong points as well.

 

Just about every good idea on 1 gets ridden for at least 2 minutes longer than it should. It’s a 70-minute album that shouldn’t crack 50 minutes. There are the bones of a good album there, but man, I can’t even make it through the thing anymore.

 

You guys remember the remix to TKO when J Cole got in a screaming fight with his partner and cried on record and told the girl that he “ought to knock your ass out”?

 

I disagree SO HARD, the songs on Part 1 that extend and ride their vibes for a long time are some of the main reasons I think the album succeeds in doing something really cool

 

part 1 is perfect.

 

MAKE IT LONGER, EXTEND THE SONGS EVEN MORE, GIVE ME 15 MINUTE JAMS OF EVERY SONG ON PART 1

 

The beat switches in Part 1 are awesome. Nothing being under 5 minutes (aside from That Girl at 4:48) is a choice and I feel it worked

 

I'm in the middle regarding this topic. Extending the songs like he did works brillantly on parts of the record but I didn't feel it was necessary on a couple songs. Unfortunately he went overboard on Part 2 with that.

 

I knew Part 2 was in trouble with “Take Back The Night” - a true nothing of a song. Never really cared for anything after that. But Part 1 is excellent.

 

Mirrors didn't need to be 8min long but the first half of that song is fucking superb

 

Mirrors needed to be 20 minutes long

 

I think he was emboldened to make his songs super long when everyone said how great the second half of “LoveStoned” was, which is an absolutely perfect ending to a song and I think a dragon he’s been chasing ever since.

 

This is the WORST take in this whole thread!!!!!!!!!! Probably his single best song that absolutely earns every single second

 

I'll grant you a few of the songs (riding the groove on "Let the Groove Get In" makes that track increasingly dizzying in a cool way) but I think he actively squanders what's great about a few of those songs by dragging them out. "Mirrors" has so much momentum in the first half and loses ALL OF IT with the endless "you, are, you, are, the, love, of my life" refrain; "Spaceship Coupe" peaks with an amazing guitar solo that would serve as an amazing fade-out, but then burns three minutes on...Princess Peach moans? And "Suit & Tie" just sucks to begin with, and then continues to suck for 5:22 when it should be a 2:30 little pop ditty.

I mean, imagine taking any fucking excellent pop song ever and grafting a boring ass outro onto it for no reason. That, for me, is "Mirrors." Holds it back from all-time great status.

Listening back, I also just find the production on 20/20 part 1 to be so suffocating. "That Girl" is such a breath of fresh air, both because it's not interminable and because it has some room to breathe.

I don’t love pt 1 nearly as much as I used to but I still absolutely love Mirrors in its entirety.
