JMK with the (expected) dissenting opinion. I get it, definitely draws directly from both of those artists and if you’ve listened to them enough this is a bit derivative. I still like it, and I think it’s cool to give them broader exposure.

I do not know who JMK is and I will keep it that way.

Song credits are up on Spotify now. Why is Eminem credited as a co writer on Yukon, is there a sample I'm not hearing?

I tried a few songs from this and yea it's not for me, I don't think it's very good. Sexyy Red sounds like she's falling asleep on her feature lol. Daises is alright, definitely the best song from the ones I heard.

We are one degree away from Ari Christos/ @fleetdominion and Justin Bieber

It’s innovative because of who he is, not what it sounds like. I am happy to hear more conventional pop song structures over Mk.gee music.

This is where I’m at, I’ve liked mk.gee but I’m really enjoying the conventionality of the structures here. Feels like JB got ahead of the curve with this, a bunch of artists are going to be incorporating their sounds, since mk.gee is basically “your artists favorite artist” of the moment

I super do not like the Sexxy Red feature on what is otherwise a really nice song

To an extent, but Dijon has already been experimenting in this soundscape and making better pop music for over a decade. I fully appreciate them getting their flowers (or at least making their money), but there is not a song on here as good as the best of Absolutely or Mk.gee’s album. Even from a pure pop standpoint.

All that said I am a big fan of this and have been pushing it on everyone I can

I don’t know how I feel about the Justin Bieber album after one late night listen but I’m also not as enamored with either artist as the rest of the blogosphere. I think they have stumbled on great sounds and put them in service of varying songwriting.

I’d say it’s a bit dismissive to categorize the evolution of Dijon’s music over 10 years as “stumbling on” a sound. It’s very much a focused and natural evolution. I am not as familiar with mk.gee’s earlier stuff, but their collaboration on Absolutely is fantastic

All of that said, even if you don’t find their individual work all that compelling, this is just a lukewarm version of the highs on either. Bieber is definitely an interesting person to collaborate on the sound, and he adds a bit more polish to the production, but it all blends together a bit after track 3-4. There is nothing new or innovative or particularly focused here outside of “let’s get a better singer than Dijon or mk.gee on their tracks”

Idunno, I think the point was made earlier in the thread, but I think it’s innovative that it’s one of the biggest pop stars of a generation integrating these sounds into his work

genuinely real interesting to hear JB over a MkGee production,
And not for nothing he’s become a really impressive vocalist.

The Glory Voice Demo is awesome in that regard

I really love the Mk.Gee record but imo Dasies competes with anything on there, there’s just a focus that JBs vocal adds to the mix that most artist can’t bring

It’s absolutely interesting and good for the collab to happen but idk about “innovative”. I think the harsh tweet kinda hits what’s missing on the head: JB has the vocals but lacks the innovative focus that each of the last two Dijon/mkgee albums had (and completely different focuses within the same sonic world) to make this something truly special. You have a major force in the pop world playing in their sandbox and that in itself is something to enjoy/be happy about, but I am not jumping to say that he has taken their sound to the next level or anything. I think it’s a great comeback for JB, and I think that folks that haven’t listened to Dijon or Mkgee (or the new Bon Iver that plays in similar spaces) are going to find something new or different here, and that’s cool.

I also think the songs here are dope. Daisies rocks. I like Go Baby a lot. There’s more interesting stuff there than any JB album I can recall listening to.

I've listened to mkgee songs on multiple occasions but haven't really "got" it I guess, none of my listens have made me want to listen to more

I’m trying to think of who else has jacked this sound and I’m coming up short besides Bon Iver.

Not enough people talking about the Michael Jackson influence here, which is stronger than on any previous JB release.

Fair enough. I didn’t mean that there wasn’t effort or skill involved — as an example, I think The 1975 have stumbled into a number of sounds and they’re my favorite active band. I have given Absolutely a dozen listens over the last four years and it’s just never clicked because the songwriting is so fluid that it falls apart and becomes practically formless.

I literally said it’s innovative because of who’s doing it, not what he’s doing. That was the first thing I said.

I remember he was on like one Brockhampton song. Haven’t heard most of the rest you’re talking about.
