I’m hoping this is being set up for Clement to get over his head with a bigger bad that becomes the main antagonist.
This isn't really Justified, and it doesn't really feel that much like Raylan Givens, but the show itself is fine so far.
it's like a generic straight to TV drama they plugged a beloved character in to lure in an existing fanbase. very little about it is outright bad (except the dialogue for Willa lol) but nothing is particularly good either. not even joking when I say I've fallen asleep during 5/6 of these episodes
I'm hesitant to criticize such a young performer but the daughter is really bad. Ultimately that is more on the director than anyone else but the nepotism plays a huge factor too.
I don't even think the acting is the problem, she's solid for someone who's literally never acted before! the writing was just absolutely horrible. that "I was watching cat videos" scene in the judge's room is some 40yo dude writing 12yo girl shit, and she's meant to be 15
Enjoying City Primeval so far but it's definitely not as stellar as I wanted it to be, being both a fan of Justified and the Leonard book it's based on. The biggest bummer is that despite being an actual adaptation of an Elmore Leonard book (which Justified isn't, beyond the pilot), it completely fails to capture the Leonard vibe. His books have an incredible rhythm to both the prose and the dialogue, everything is sharp and snappy without being outwardly showy. Justified nailed that. City Primeval feels more like "prestige TV" writing, where scenes drag and exist only as set-up. There's such an insane gap in quality between Clement scenes and the scenes featuring other supporting characters. Holbrook pops off the screen whereas every non-Raylan law enforcement character is just totally weak. Overall happy to have the show but yeah it's in the good-not-great category for me
They should just start dropping other beloved characters into new shows they don't belong in. Put Jimmy McNulty in a sitcom. Put Walter White in Young Sheldon.
The most interesting thing I got out of this is that Walter Goggins ages much slower than the rest of us.
lol what the hell was that coda? I enjoyed hanging out with Olyphant again and actually preferred the ending before Goggins showed up. the final showdown could have been a bit longer, those guys crackled on screen together. ultimately I would never watch this miniseries the way I would rewatch Justified. just not densely plotted enough and nowhere near enough memorable dialogue.
The side characters in this one aren't nearly as memorable as the original show. The three cops that Raylan was working with are mostly anonymous. While the show had much more time to develop Raylan's three main co-workers, this is ultimately about the length of three movies and they were still flat.
Yeah Clement was really the only memorable character besides Raylan which is a shame because there were some good actors on the show. Overall it was fun but not very memorable and not something I'd return to.
I think Kentucky is really Justified's ace in the whole. There wasn't any character to Detroit in the way the main series leaned into the quirks and color of the setting. And the cinematography was so dark and muddy it made Ozark look like it was in Technicolor. It looked like nearly every other police procedural. My wife and I could not stop laughing when they cut to Boyd preaching. Baby Billy looms large over Goggins now, and if you put a bible in his hand I'm just waiting for the vulgar insights to start flying. It was fun to spend more time with Raylan, but I'll probably forget this existed a few weeks from now.
So was this kind of like what “Many Saints of Newark” was to “The Sopranos”? I have too many shows to keep up with, but don’t really feel like diving back in if it’s just kind of okay.
