That’s a list of comic book creators. Before being publicly known as an alt right creep who was a big instigator in harassing Kelly Marie Tran & made of a liberal comic artist on Twitter ‘cause she had cancer... he was a major DC artist (who still snuck “ironic” swastikas in his signature) who drew a lot of major storylines. (Funny enough, a lot of it written by Geoff Johns, the allegedly shitty writer/producer who gave Snyder & Ray Fisher trouble. Who... is also listed, so clearly this isn’t a list of people Snyder likes.)
Also, Snyder endorsed Biden in the election. I bet he’s got roughly the same brand of corporate American pro-military ‘moderate’ political beliefs as, say, Kevin Feige. Which, is obviously still important to criticize thoroughly, but it’s not the same as a simplistic “I bet he’s personally an alt right Trump supporter!” I mean, heck, he said in an interview the other day that he was specifically happy he didn’t make The Fountainhead yet & still has it on the back burner because he knows it’d be taken the wrong way by the wrong people, lol. He may be really dumb in certain ways, particularly as a storyteller, but he’s not what a vocal part of his fan base & detractors seem to think he is.
Only barely started and I can’t believe Joss cut the best Wonder Woman scene from the London scene. That was so great.
Snyder has spent this entire saga enabling the worst, most toxic portions of his fanbase, so yeah I'm not surprised they left Van Sciver in the credits. Dude is a pos and having been a comics artist in no way erases that. Snyder didn't have to leave him in there but he chose to anyway.
I don’t want him credited either. I also don’t want John Byrne in the WandaVision credits, even though his work was an influence, because he compared trans people to predators & has a really gross track record of writing teenage girls being romantic with grown men. It’s a big problem in mainstream American comics & related superhero media that really needs taken care of.
As said, I enjoyed this, while also hating that it had numerous problems that plague every Snyder movie: slow motion (could have been a half-hour shorter without it), terrible needle drops, jokes that sound like they were written by an algorithm, an awful epilogue. I liked hanging out with the JL crew a little longer, something that was denied in the past because of the Whedon cut/WB meddling. It was really nice to be back with Diana and the Amazons in a tone that felt closer to Jenkins’s first Wonder Woman and not WW84. I’ll also say that I’m surprised that The Flash quips were Snyder’s doing (though I guess not that surprising because absolutely none of them are funny). That felt like Whedon’s work. Either way, Barry/The Flash/Ezra Miller all suck. A total wasted character.
Steppenwolf face is so small, it’s really off putting. It’s like a baby’s face, especially when he’s angry. Like he’s having a tantrum.
He looks truly awful. Astounding that the original cut of the movie came out less than a year before Infinity War and yet Thanos looks like he was made with tech several years more advanced than Steppenwolf was.
Just to add to this... If Marvel Studios uses some of the characters from Grant Morrison’s New X-Men, like the Stepford Cuckoos (who were in Gifted) or Angel (who was in First Class) or Beak or Dust, they’re probably gonna have Ethan Van Sciver in the credits because he co-created ‘em.
I think we all know there's a difference between legally having to credit someone as a creator and giving someone a "Special Thanks" in the credits lol As for the John Byrne credit, that's obviously also bad. It doesn't negate this being bad too.
Stopping at the beginning of part 4. Thoughts so far: - Def a Snyder paced movie and all the resulting issues - Far better so far than what we got - This could only exist a miniseries or streaming as it is - I'm having a blast
The sad thing is, this whole thing ended up being posted in here in response to Zack himself unequivocally disowning a nerd hate group, which is what got these #ComicsGate & adjacent creeps mad: I mean, you can hear him get literally choked up when talking about being a father to Asian kids (which, one of those kids was Autumn Snyder, the aspiring filmmaker daughter of his who took her life, who he tried to honor in this monstrous film, who EVS surely would've gone after had she lived to do work). And, the point I was making when bringing that back up with the X-Men thing (which was only a delayed continuation because I was busy doing work stuff) was that the "special thanks" here was the same thing. It's not what that one tweet disingenuously and/or inaccurately claimed. (Again, Geoff fucking Johns is in the same list, lol.) It's fairly standard practice in Hollywood at the moment in response to the years of comics creators getting fucked over by companies & not properly credited or compensated, which is getting better but still bad. The flip side to that progress is that now they gotta worry about thanking an important creator who is also awful, like Jim Steranko or Warren Ellis. It's a bigger conversation that's absurd to twist into some shitty culture war against Snyder (when you could just hate him as an artist instead like a normal person). All of that's not to say we can't critique & wrestle with the ways Snyder has fed into an online mess of harassment that all evidence shows he wouldn't personally endorse. That's definitely a conversation to have with him. And... with Taylor Swift. And... with online Leftists. It, likewise, is a bigger conversation. Maybe try not making your disdain for Snyder & his indulgent, messy ass films into some kinda moral crusade? Just make fun of the slo mo sesame seed & razor or whatever's apparently in here & move on, lol.
