Cyborg’s storyline has some good stuff going on, too bad Snyder didn’t entangle it with everything else going on in the movie. For being 4 fucking hours you could trim a whole lot to focus on one character’s perspective a little more and devote some time to fleshing out emotional conflicts and connections rather than explain Mother Boxes as many times as you can.
It’s truly baffling how many things these characters do aren’t set up by scenes of emotion. It’s all logistics: we need to stop the bad guy so we need to do this. Maybe 20% of it is able to successfully pair “we need to stop the bad guy” with an emotional core or connection between characters and that’s probably generous.
Almost offensive how the epilogue wraps up the emotional stories that the entire movie should have been about but were just introduced out of obligation and then abandoned for mother boxes
I hadn't seen a Snyder movie in a while and I forgot how there's absolutely no subtly to anything. He just beats you over the head with how heavy handed everything is
What the holy hell was that last scene ... really missed a chance to tie relationship of the two biggest characters from BVS together but Snyder did ... that.
Better than the original, bloated as fuck, liked portions of this, Snyder needs a fucking editor as there pieces in here that have potential, and once again its better than the original.
I would argue the theatrical may actually be better. It grounded the action with the family angle, despite being silly and I thought Superman's arrival in the final battle was much better in the theatrical. This just felt like sunk costs to me. That said, if folks got 4 hours of enjoyment, especially in the midst of a damn pandemic then I certainly won’t complain about their happiness.
After my love of Superman in Superman & Lois so far, I'm not really interested in diving in for more Snyder Supes, buuuuut, I'm totally going to watch this anyway. Might as well.
Just finished it. It’s better than the 2017 film. The film was definitely too long for its own good, but the more I get to see of Henry Cavill’s Superman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, the better.
That Old God battle scene also made me want more from that time period. That was intriguing to me. Also whoever said that should have been at the start of the movie is correct.
I will say, not as a comment about this particular film (which is, I’m sure, as bad structurally & narratively as all Snyder films), but just in general... “Team movies should have solo movies leading up to ‘em” is such a lazy, Marvel-poisoned take, lol. Like the slightly off “too many villains” complaint people say a lot, but even worse. If that were true, we wouldn’t have X2, the Guardians films, or Birds of Prey.
Agreed - I think the big thing is how the movie focuses it’s attention. A lot of ensemble films have a “center” but this one definitely does not. Even within the MCU you have the Guardians of the Galaxy - great team film but Peter is clearly the center.
“Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” Reviewed: A Super-Slog of a Superhero Superspectacle | The New Yorker Richard Brody writing on a film that doesn’t deserve his time
If people can’t watch this version of Justice League, let alone the original, and recognize that it would have been way better if Cyborg, Aquaman, and Flash had had solo films first then idk what to tell those people lol
I disagree but can at least understand the argument for MoS, but BvS is a complete disaster. It’s way worse than original JL.
Siddhant Adlakha’s review lines closely with my thoughts ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ Is Longer, But Not Much Better
Well none of that should be surprising, the Snyder Cut hysteria always came from violently toxic groups
For sure. (Generally speaking; like I said, I haven’t seen this full monster yet, lol.) I remember, years ago, arguing that the inevitable Justice League film should follow the model of Darwyn Cooke’s New Frontier, which tied Hal Jordan’s origin to the alien threat. This should’ve been similar, where Cyborg (who’s tied to Darkseid/Apokalips through the Mother Boxes) is the Peter Quill/Wolverine/Rogue/etc. POV entry to the story w/ all the emotional stakes. Maybe even have a Lantern (either Hal Jordan or Jessica Cruz) as another POV. It’s that anchor that they need, not a half dozen origin films, lol.
