Eh 300 looks almost exactly like the graphic novel and I remember Dawn of the Dead looking normal. Watchmen had more color than I remember his later work having. But yeah his DC stuff is pretty lifeless

He can compose and coordinate action like no one else though. Few are that good. Joins Michael Bay and JJ Abrams as having an identifiable energy in their action that a lot of directors envy, but who make movies I find almost completely unenjoyable

Really, instead of Watchmen & Superman, the comics Snyder should’ve adapted are those by Rob Liefeld & Marc Silvestri.

Watchmen and Dawn of the Dead look pretty good. But yeah, the rest is like latter-day Tim Burton - gross and lifeless.

I will say I think Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead is one of the best zombie films out there. I think it’s his best film

I was gonna say I've only seen Watchmen but I was like oh yeah Man of Steel

I'll always be mad about Sucker Punch because the cast and aesthetic are very much my shit but nothing else

I'm not talking Deadpool, whose popularity mostly came from post-Liefeld creators' work anyways. I'm talking, like, peak Extreme Studios Liefeld, like Bloodstrike & Chapel & Prophet. Like, you look at a Stephen Platt Prophet drawing from the 90s & tell me it's not begging to be brought to life by Snyder.

And, to be clear, I'm not even necessarily saying "good." All evidence points to Snyder being a pretty decent human being with an affection for cinematic spectacle, but without a particularly... elevated taste, lol. But, the same was true of most of that 90s Image shit. Eric Larsen was a good superhero writer, & Todd McFarlane put himself in Spawn in a fascinating way, but most of it was infamously style over substance... which, is also how a lot of people describe Snyder! Even Shadowhawk, in spite of Jim Valentino being maybe the purest traditional cartoonist of the Image founders, is just a Darkhawk/Batman/Wolverine-type whose gimmick is breaking criminals' spines. Why isn't Snyder doing that, instead of adapting Alan Moore & quoting Grant Morrison's Superman!?

Or, like, doing some Marc Silvestri Top Cow shit? Classic Witchblade is basically Gal Gadot wearing 30% of Steppenwolf's spikey armor, lol. Snyder doing Witchblade & The Darkness would be trash, but it'd be the kinda trash that fits the source material, & I'd probably have nostalgic fun with it, lol.

  15. I've always thought MoS and BvS, at the very least, looked more cinematic than most of the MCU movies. The early Avengers movies in particular can look a little too televisual.

Yeah, I actually really like the visuals of Man of Steel. Moreso than any of the MCU movies aside from some of the more recent ones where the directors had a little more wiggle room. I wasn't able to make it all the way through Batman v. Superman: The Dawn of Justice, and I really can't remember what that movie looked like. I think I conflate it in my head sometimes with the 2017 Justice League movie, which looked like someone rubbing dog shit in eyes and punching me in the face.

I think Zack Snyder is actually pretty damn talented at crafting awesome looking visuals on screen. I think his weaknesses come more from not understanding the points of the stories he is telling or the characters he is playing with.

There are visual decisions in the Snyder DC films that I really don't like, but yeah, his films definitely on average feel more cinematic than much of Marvel's stuff. I think some of that is due to him wanting his stuff shot on film, which I don't have a romanticized "it's always better than digital" opinion of, but in some instances it really helps. I like that film grain aesthetic in the more straightforward, less effects-driven scenes, which is more attractive to my eyes than some of Marvel's more concrete-looking scenes.

It is funny to me that he loves film & advocates for the cinematic experience... but then makes style-over-substance schlock & rants about how real adults know that Batman kills, lol. He's just not all that into story, or character, or themes, or humor, or charm, etc.

That Cyborg design choice is still such a bummer.

Nothing wrong with Affleck as Batman. He's not playing a version that I care for, but he carries himself in the role perfectly for a version that a lot of Batman fans really dig.

He was a lot worse in Justice League, but with the movie fresh in my mind, a lot of that comes down to the Whedon stuff not working for him. He's clearly worse in the reshoots. I think Aquaman is the only character who really benefits from that mandatory fun, lol.

Granted, Affleck was also losing interest in this whole big Batman commitment he'd signed on for regardless, hence him dropping out of the solo film that turned into that more exciting Pattinson project. Wasn't he just generally having a very bad time in his life at the time? So, I wouldn't be surprised if he still feels a bit checked out of Snyder's JL. But, it'll probably be closer to BvS, where he was "very good, for someone playing a Batman who's old & bitter & like totally murders people, y'all."

someone close to him said they thought he would die if he played batman again. pretty safe to say he was struggling.

Yeah, I have no qualms with Batfleck. In the right hands, him and Jeremy Irons would have made a memorable team as Bruce and Alfred. Instead, they’re just lost in the shuffle of too much mythology being shoehorned in to two movies. And Affleck was definitely struggling. Glad he got out.
