Justice League (Zack Snyder, November 17, 2017) Movie • Page 62

  1. Aww man I would like to see Snyder’s version. He’s not the best director but I usually enjoy his visual flair. Would’ve been cool to see some of the stuff from that video really come to life.

I think a plot arc could have been cool if Darkseid takes over Earth and the league needs to do something with the anti-life equation/flash to reset the timeline, but ya, at this point lets just move on.

It's also funny to see people have faith in that "this would be sooo cool" like it would be different than the other Synder films. Granted I really enjoyed BvS Ultimate, but still. I doubt this would have been leaps and bounds better than anything else. AND if it takes multiple "meh" movies to get there, it ain't worth it.

    I agree with this.

If his version of JL wasn't messed with so much though, do you think BvS would have been the only 'meh' movie from him? I can't help but think we missed out on something really cool, the future movies coming up all look great too.

If anything, I hope we end up getting a "The Death of Superman Lives, What Happened" type of doc someday.

I'm not sure to be honest. I really like the idea of going to Apokolips, it's almost like an episode of Justice League animated with a massive budget. That said, I feel like if ZS had no rope holding him back, it would be super convoluted. IDK the right balance for him, but as a director there really shouldn't have to be any. He has great vision IMO, but he just is not a good storyteller.

It ended up being a lose-lose scenario in my opinion. I don't think either Zack Snyder or Joss Whedon are beyond reproach - I think they can both do great work but I have major reservations about both of their styles - but the way it was ultimately made with one person shooting the entire thing and then someone coming in later to do reshoots and changing huge aspects of the film on the fly is honestly probably the absolute worst possible way to make a movie. I honestly think either one of them could have made a fantastic Justice League movie, but neither one of them got the chance and we ended up with this gigantic clusterf----.

I suppose I am kind of partial to Zack Snyder if I had to pick one over the other so I guess I am biased, but I can't see how just finishing 'his version' wouldn't have been a better plan when it was so late in the game...

The fact that scripts are looked at as kind of an afterthought these days in Hollywood is honestly f---ing mind-blowing to me, and situations like these seem to be the result of that.

If they started from the very beginning, like from the first draft of a script, I'd love to see them tackle a movie on this scale together.

Yeah, I mean for me that would be pretty damn ideal. I tend to really enjoy Joss Whedon's writing, so if there was a set story figured out ahead of time, Joss wrote the script and then Zack Snyder directed it and production went smoothly without a different director coming in after the film was shot and reshooting a shitload of the film and changing it drastically, yeah that woulda been great.

Looking at how this film turned out just reinforces how much of a miracle it was that 'Solo' was such a coherent film. I still think it was the wrong idea to fire the original directors of that film and reshoot almost the entire film at an ungodly expense, even though I ultimately enjoyed the 'Solo' we got in the end. Far too much money was spent and it set 'Solo' up to be considered a failure. Looking at how great most of Lord & Miller's work is, it seems pretty far fetched that whatever they were making was so terrible.

  12. I've always thought that if he had the right writer and there was a real collaboration to find a balance with Snyder's darker aesthetic and tone while keeping true to the spirit of the characters, there would be a middle ground that Snyder could find to please general audiences. Maybe not Whedon, though.

I'm saying this as someone who loves MoS and BvS and found JL enjoyable, even though it's a mess. For people who never liked Snyder, he was probably never going to be the right fit.

Visually, Snyder is incredible. I don't think he was the best choice to be The Godfather of the DC film universe so-to-speak, because I think his take story-wise on them all is honestly kind of f---ed up and weird. They needed a Kevin Feige type person overseeing the whole thing.

Yeah, from the batman scenes in BvS and the intro to Justice League, I think he should have just been the director of a solo Batman movie with someone else as the Godfather/Kevin Feige type for the DCEU.

I was actually a big fan of Man of Steel, although I did feel like it had a few major flaws, like Supes' wanton disregard for collateral damage and human life, but I chalked that up to him just starting out and learning. I held out hope it would kinda be worked out going forward in subsequent movies.

    I was wrong.

Visually, I still think MoS is spectacular though.

I love every shot in MoS, its so beautiful.

To be fair he was only superman for less than 24 hours, but yeah the they never really expanded on it in BvS like it should have, like a half baked idea where they brought it up but again just destroyed a ton of the city again when fighting Doomsday lol.

That's how I looked at the destruction and stuff - like he was literally JUST starting out, and even though he's very powerful he's just been dropped into the deep end so-to-speak with other massively powerful people attacking him. He's learning on the fly. The neck snap at the end didn't bother me as much as it did some other people, because he obviously did not enjoy what he was doing and found it to be very traumatic and painful, but that was not something I would have had Superman do if I was the one making the movie.

The tornado thing didn't work for me at all back then, and as time goes by it just gets dumber and dumber the more that I reflect on it.

That is the one part about the movie that I never even try to argue. It works for me but it could have been done any other way haha.

Also you are spot on about him just starting out as well. I liked that his "never kill" stand point was earned through feeling what it was like to do so, even when protecting others. And to feel him wiping out the last of his kind was so tragic.

The more we discuss this, the more I realize I actually am still a big fan of Man of Steel, I was just very, very disappointed in where his story went from there in subsequent films.

Yep! It's a favorite film for me but man did he get the shaft in both BvS and JL.

The Ultimate Cut makes the film more than just a Batman film feat. Superman, but it still doesn't do a lot with him. That's why I said he should have just been in charge of a Batman solo film, it was obvious that's what he wanted to do during BvS lol.

I think it's the strangest thing that they didn't do a sequel to MoS. Why didn't he get his own follow up? It was very clearly an origin story.

    * Edited to add that $668 million box office haul is pretty damn good. Batman Begins only made $374 million, and it wasn't dramatically less expensive to make.

Perhaps with Zack Snyder apparently moving on to other projects we will actually get a Henry Cavill starring Man of Steel 2 with a different creative team.....
