I'm not sure I agree. Basically what the Forbes contributor did is use a median multiplier of past DCEU movies (small sample) and estimating what the costs/budget/marketing will be to project what it will make. There's quite a few things I think are wrong with that kind of estimation. It's not a bad way to do it, but it's not as scientific of tracking/reviews and building an actual model.
I think one of the more interesting things is that people seem to actually like this movie, by and large.
Yeah that is kind of surprising. I've heard almost nothing but good about it and like myself, people say they want another now.
or the difference a 2nd viewing makes. its still a mess but its coherent and has flashes of brilliance. still id take DCAU over this any day. just go back to the DCAU pls WB give us some new shows
I would love to see another serious but fun style show again like BTAS or Justice League Unlimited, but don't sleep on Justice League Action if you have been. I watch it with my kids every Saturday morning and it's a ton of fun.
it’s the most “this is fine” movie i can remember in recent memory. the film, if directed by a proper filmmaker, could have been great. just everything surrounding the making of the film was super disappointing, considering it could have been great
My comment wasn’t in response to the Forbes article in particular, I admit I didn’t read that beyond the headline. I didn’t mean to imply that the 50-100 million loss is known at this point, only that the films final box office tally is fairly easily predictable now that we have first weekend numbers. Most analysts, and certainly WB, now have numbers indicating the breakdown of the audience demos and metrics like cinemascore, etc. With that data, it isn’t hard to make a highly educated guess as to where this ends up in the box office revenue department. Now it’s just the speculation game with regards to costs and ancillary revenue generation. But that information could get reported during quarterly earnings. Certainly, WB has hoped for much more from the film. In that respect, I think it’s safe to say it disappointed. But whether it cost them a significant amount of money is almost certainly speculation, some more trustworthy than others, at this point.
I am really curious what WBs foreign distribution deals were. Given how important those revenue streams are, I don’t know that the general public has a lot of info regarding how those profits are allocated.
I'm with @drewinseries though that this breaks my heart. Even though I loved most of the DCEU films up to this point, I know most people haven't and even though this film leaves off where I think most wanted it to start with, it may be too late.
It was probably the most enjoyable comic book movie I've seen this year. HOWEVER, I haven't seen Wonder Woman yet, or Thor.
I feel like Logan and Thor are the best superhero movies I've seen this year. JL may be the most fun though, but I've been waiting for this live action movie since I was like 10.
Logan and Guardians 2 were my favorite. JL is under those and the rest are just below JL. For me, it's been a good year of superhero movies. They were all good to great.
I can't even talk trash on people not liking Logan because I didn't like Guardians 2 and I know I'm about to get roasted on here.
Lego Batman has the same issues for me that the first Lego movie did. It starts guns blazing, then tapers off in the middle somewhere. Spiderman Homecoming was not for me, I really didn't enjoy that. GOTG2 disappointed me, which was sad because I think the first is my favorite Marvel film.
GOTG2 wasn't as good as the first, but I still liked it. That said I've only seen it once. I've seen a bunch of the others two or three times.
These are my feelings as well. People ask me all the time why I am/was so hyped for this film. The DC characters and mythos are such a huge part of my childhood/adolescence and even adulthood that I can't even convey how much these characters mean to me. I want this film and this universe to do well because I want to share with others why these characters mean so much to me.
I wanted to like Atomic Blonde so much more than I did. It was fine, good action scenes, but that storyline was super messy.
