I like really want to watch it but then all the negative words just tell me how much of doing so would be masochism
I’d suggest giving it a shot. Everyone has their own opinion, but hey you might end up enjoying some of it.
I feel like I'm gonna let various hot takes slip out over the next day or two, & my next one is that I genuinely liked the Steppenwolf design. Keep in mind that I grew up with 90s comics, really digging Carnage & Witchblade, so this particular brand of tastelessness has been grafted into my brain for years, lol. But, a lot of his design registered as "cool" to me. And, another part of my brain lit up at how successful they were at giving him a sad puppy dog face in the couple scenes it was warranted. Also, he was more sympathetic, with better motivations, than Infinity War's genocidal abusive daddy.
I posted this about 20 min after saying I still like some songs by Christian rock band Pillar, which feels deeply appropriate.
I also genuinely enjoyed Steppenwolf's new design and thought it at least justified his being an entirely CGI creation. The original design could and should have been just a guy wearing a costume / armor with some makeup on. Someone did mention on here that he has a tiny fucking face now and that is all I can see when I look at him. The way his armor leaves only his face exposed does make it look comically small.
Looking at it right now, the face doesn't really bother me. Fits the overall comic-book-y alien design fairly well, imo.
Taking a break after Part 3 and while there’s been some good moments (Barry saving Iris minus the hotdogs, Cyborg finally showing up, Bruce & Diana, Gordon, Steppenwolf underwater fight) it feels like nothings happened yet. It’s still setting up all the characters, villains, history, motherboxes, etc with little forward movement in the actual plot.
This makes total sense. I grew up with the cartoons which have the more traditional, solid color designs so that’s what I gravitate toward.
To be fair, I did also grow up with the cartoons. And, if I were making a Justice League movie from scratch, my biggest touchstone by far would be Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier. I have enough of a soft spot for this aesthetic, though, that I'm able to come at it on its own terms & dig it a lot for what it is. Helps a lot that the entire DC slate doesn't have to bend around this particular vision for the universe. With a Ta-Nehisi Coates Superman in development, for example, I don't have to hold not being "right" against this Superman.
“You have been near a motherbox. Its scent is on you.” - Steppenwolf and the pastor when my parents drag me to church
Finished Part 5 and now that it’s actually moving, I’m enjoying it a lot more. Snyder excels at the action aesthetic and the scenes with the team together are really good. It just took way too long to get here and there’s a lot of fat in the first 3 parts that should have been trimmed. Like I said, there’s a great movie buried in here. Just needed a better overall plot (killing Supes in BvS still baffles me and Darksied/Steppenwolf was a poor choice for an opening villain IMO), better characterizations, and someone to tell Snyder ‘No’ on some of his style/editing choices when they’re unnecessary. Gonna watch some March Madness and finish it later.
yeah like people complained that everyone was too quippy in the Whedon version but like parts of this version comes across as a writer and a director both trying to emulate Whedon-esque comedy writing/directing and failing at it badly
Finally finished and it’s still a giant mess but way better than the original. Part 6 was actually pretty decent. Fuck Leto and his shitty joker. Also did they redo the Superman GCI for his mustache? It didn’t look as bad as I remember.
This movie was less good because there was no shot of Aquaman chugging a bottle of whiskey while Icky Thump played
