I just don't get gratification out of making someone feel like an idiot because they feel different, like when I was a teenager its all I wanted to do now I just want everyone to be able to make a point and get it across and respect that they feel that way. Folks... my 23 (hehe) year old intern asked me yesterday what kind of music Blink-182 was. “Are they metal?”
I thought it was a joke. I’d never encountered one of these whippersnappers before. “When I was in high school this band was EVERYTHING to me - still kinda is!”
“Are they big?”
“Ya! Tens of millions of records sold, still playing huge venues, etc.”
“Are they like the Beatles?”
“I mean... to me! But, no - not really” haha “still PRETTY big though!”

So, okay, luckily my entire collection is in my edit bay so I crack it open and he seems genuinely interested so I wax poetic about the importance and exciting world of liner notes and CD singles. As I’m putting it away to do some actual work, he says to me - he says “I’ve never heard their music before.”
What?! WHAT?! “Not possible. You’ve accidentally heard I miss you, ATST, or WMAA before.” Didn’t sound familiar to his memory at least. “Who else do they sound like?...”
*scoffs to self (in a fun way)* “huh. I mean I suppose Green Day?” (Not gonna stray down the skate punk forefathers path)

Haha. I’m 100% having the time of my life here because I’m salivating. WHAT DO I PLAY HIM FIRST??
So I throw on miss you. I gotta see if he’s ACTUALLY never heard a blink song. HAS NEVER HEARD IT! “This is great! I like this!”

So I play WMAA - blank stares, but he really digs it!
ATST - not until tom says “carry me home” does it kinda jog something in him.

anyway, he’s like “man I’m gonna get into them!”
We go on to talk about how he’s really into metal (and AAR apparently) because I play him first date and he asks if I like when they “play fast like that.”
“Oh man - the faster the better!” (which was said more as a funny response than truth now that I think about it more.)

All in all, that was such a trip for me and super fun. He liked everything he heard, I told him a readers digest version of the history and that tom’s not there anymore and somehow their live show came up and I was ripping a lossless copy of MTATS for a buddy so I played him some of the banter. We laughed about how most of it wouldn’t go over well in 2019 but for a 16 year old in 2000 it didn’t get any better than this. “They’d be great in one of those trek movies!” EXACTLY! He gets it.
