Hip hop and pop are obviously different. These are artists with a vision already that hire musicians to carry out their vision. That's not how a band like The National works where they likely make a lot more compromises and have more opinions in the room.

it's just weird and wrong to say lead singers aren't the "quaterback" of bands when they're the ones that are the center of the stage, sonically and physically on stage, write the lyrics for the songs which is the thing people usually remember most, and are literally called a frontperson

 

fuck Morrissey but the Smiths aren't the Smiths without his vocals or lyrics

REM isn't REM without Michael Stipe

Simon and Garfunkel aren't Simon and Garfunkel without Garfunkel

I'm not saying these groups would be shit without these members but come on it's undeniable that lyrics and vocals are huge components of how you receive a band even if structurally they're not doing much (which I'd argue isn't the case for each of the examples I mentioned)

also there's a lot to be said for a curatorial role in songwriting anyway, like most pop music

 

Also more lead singers write music than you're giving credit for.

 

It's honestly a related opinion. Yeah shitty lyrics don't instantly turn me off of a band because the lyrics aren't the whole band. Built To Spill basically hardly has any lyrics that are above average but I still think they're an A grade band

 

Radiohead doesn't write great lyrics, but i LOVE them

 

I can recognize that all of this is going on and be critical of it at the same time

Just because they're a "distinguishing" factor of the band doesn't mean they should be given most of the credit though. Yeah the band wouldn't be the same without them but that still doesn't mean they deserve most of the credit.

Like if i remove parsley my shrimp scampi doesn't taste the same but the parsley isn't the only thing that makes shrimp scampi good

everyone in the band has a role, but i don't think i've ever seen an argument saying the lead singer/song writers for bands aren't a de facto leadership role and get to much credit because they don't write the chord progressions or melodies

Even if I was just a guitarist, you damn right I'd be the one arranging and producing the songs. But the singer would get all the credit just for slapping some vocals and lyrics on top of that.

I feel like on forums like this we typically do acknowledge most of the musicians that make up the material we love. Singers are just (typically) a lot more “out there” and in the press because normally interviews dive into lyrics rather than how they stumbled upon a chord progression. For music nerds like us I feel artists get the appreciation they deserve but for the more casual music fan it makes sense they only know the face of the band, regardless of how much input they have or not in the writing process.

 

I'm not sure how you can say that given the way the whole thread has reacted to me saying that other musicians in the band should be given more credit instead of going directly and entirely to the singer.

I'm not sure how that's your take away. You're saying shitty lyrics are irrelevant. I'm pointing out what should be obvious - shitty lyrics have more power to ruin a song.

Also, no one is saying give credit entirely to the singer, that's something you've just made up haha. And again, you're ignoring that a lot of singers are the main songwriter and arranger for the band. Especially solo acts.

 

I just hate calling a band generic when literally their guitar, bass, and drums are not generic at ALL haha

like who cares if the vocals are generic that's just pop-punk as an entire GENRE
