BOUGHT MY FUCKIN BIKE TODAY




It is straight up awesome that I moved here, which emptied my savings, and within 2 months I could afford a $1200 (incl taxes, setup, warranty and locks) bike. Couldn’t dream in my wildest imagination I could just “save up” for $1000+ when I lived in FL, I used to have to rely on tax returns for new guitars, studio time, and car repairs. My new job is so much better.

 

Still gotta get lights for night riding, and a rack and fixed, climate controlled tote bags for groceries, so that’ll be at least another $200.

But man, even in downtown ATL, without a car a lot of errands require half an hour of walking each way... and carrying things back too. It’s so nice that’s now gonna be 10 minutes each way and carrying more stuff back home hands-free

 

now I'm a dumb dumb who doesn't know how much things cost but how is a bike $1400 haha, can't that get you like a used car even though you should def bike and not drive if you can

 

I mean, a really terrible used car that’s likely to have expensive issues around the corner... and that also doesn’t count insurance, license / registration, and gas costs. You should expect to spend at least $600 on a bike that’s for daily commute not just for occasional biking trips, I wanted a NICE one - ergo $1000.

They had cheaper bikes that would’ve been fine on predictable flat ground but I needed a pretty nice bike to handle the terrain and old streets / sidewalks here. Constant maintenance on a cheaper bike can make it just as expensive.

This one felt really stable and has an upgraded suspension, gearbox and mountain bike wheels to handle all that. I was also able to pedal up hills much more easily with it. It’s an investment cause I will likely ride this almost daily for the next few years, I want it to be easy to ride on rough routes and i want it to be durable.

The bike itself is $1050, taxes and accessories are the other $350. Being able to accessorize it so I can carry literally a week’s worth of groceries was a big selling point too.

It also looked way cooler than the $600 bikes so yeah.

A lot of middle class & above commuters ride $2k bikes and then professional performance road bikes / mountain bikes range from $3k to $10k

I was very shocked by the price of bikes too when I first looked at my options. This is the first time I’ve bought a bike as an adult.

You can buy single speed bikes for cheaper but that’s not gonna be fun at all when you have to go up hills. Which is often where I live.

I start teaching again on Monday, so we’ve just finished our teacher work week. My school got volunteers to book a place for us at this decent restaurant with lots of free food. It was during happy hour ($2 on most drafts) and ya boi took hella advantage.
