How on earth is the death scene misogynist? I think we might be grasping at straws on this one.

In films like this, the deaths of villains are portrayed as more gruesome and painful than the death of heroes. In the original Jurassic Park, the bounty hunter is given a heroes' death and Samuel L. Jackson dies offscreen, while the lawyer is humiliated by being eaten on the toilet and Newman is tortured and struggles. Now, the original film is not perfect in this, since Hammond is clearly the villain, but at least those two are given reasons for us to hate them (shutting down the park and abandoning the kids). By contrast, the assistant did not do anything wrong other than being a woman. She is portrayed talking about her wedding during work and this is why she has to have such a long death. It is not as if it is the only misogynist moment in the film; the entire character of Claire and that painfully stupid career/babymaking dichotomy they set up adds to it.

The plot sounds incredibly stupid and not thought out.

How the fuck can man made dinosaurs go extinct? Just make more. If the ones on the island die, who cares? Just make more.

    Life will find a way.

Hammond's book death was a great example too, though I'd say he's an even bigger villain in the book. He falls down a hill and breaks his ankle, running from what he thought was the juvenile T. rex, but was really a recorded tyrannosaur roar over the park's P.A. system. He gets eaten by Compys.

Yeah, I think if the original JP was being made today, Hammond would die.

I read the book in high school and it was what helped me realize how wrong the movie was to portray him as a kindly old man. The lawyer is killed for leaving the kids, but early on we are meant not to like him for the grand sin of being concerned about the park's safety while Hammond brings his own grandchildren to a park that is not fully operational. Jurassic World has the same problem with the new owner, who gets to go out in a blaze of glory while the villain is the bounty hunter who has nothing to do with the incident and is biggest sin is something he might theoretically do in the future.

I take issue with this statement. Hammond is clearly the villain in the book, but the movie turns him into a sympathetic character. Hammond's ignorance in the movie makes disaster possible, but it's ultimately Nedry who pulls the trigger on the catastrophe that ensues in the park. Hammond is far from a mustache-twirling villain; his greatest fault is that his intentions are simply too naïve and childlike. It's one of the things I admire most about the movie, that it's effective and terrifying without the need for a prominent, overbearing antagonist.

The movie has a warped sense of morality. Hammond bears the ultimate responsibility for everything that happens. Nedry is a shallow, greedy opportunist, but the difference between shutting down the rides at Disney World and shutting down a park full of dinosaurs is life or death. The film wants us to sympathize with Hammond, with the second film going so far as to portray him as a protector of life.

He does not have to be mustache twirling to be the villain; Nedry is not either. He is careless, and exposes his employees, the experts he brings in, and his own grandchildren to a disaster. The book is more satisfying in killing him, but the film could have even gotten around this by giving him a chance to sacrifice himself or something of that caliber.

I still don't entirely agree, but I like your explanation. I've always had a soft spot for Hammond, and I think him seeing his employees killed, his grandkids almost killed, and the collapse of his park are punishment enough for the character. You definitely feel his sense of remorse at the end.

Holy shit that actually has me really excited now.

    Also practical effects!

The look of this in general has me hyped. JW was so bright/glossy. This has a lot of dark tones.

Someone needs to spray a dino in the face with that smart serum from Planet of the Apes and fully embrace a dinosaur vs man plot.
