I only found out about Camp Cope because of an Audiotree email for their live stream and the rest is history.
Came to read about Julien and people are talking about Camp Cope. Love it. My friend saw Julien in Toronto and texted me saying "they are playing that Australian band you love before the show". And I'm really in the same boat as some of you. Been on a huge female fronted band/artist kick in the last year or so. Julien, Phoebe, Camp Cope, The Weather Station have all been dominating my headphones lately.
I was at that show and I was overhwelmed with joy when I walked into the venue and heard them playing. Cayetana, probably closest
If anyone is on twitter, I started a thread of female musicians / artists in our scene that deserve attention in the wake of the allegations. If anyone wants to RT / add to it, feel free:
I keep going to listen to this and go to sleep but I end up listening to it like twice and drinking coffee on my front porch cause that's my fav way to listen to music. I am bad at sleeping it's almost 3am ahhh Also thank you all for talking about Camp Cope. Always looking for new and great female bands! Judging by the first track I'm gonna dig this album a lot. Also cool they'e Aussie, need to listen to more music from there. I've gotten into Lisa Mitchell recently too who has a few great tracks
Alex Lahey, Ali Barter, Tired Lion, Amy Shark, Sloan Peterson and Tash Sultana are some cool female artists from here too :)
Okay, thank you so very bloody much. I haven’t been able to listen to music much these past few days. I adore their singles and I’m instantly connecting with this band. Fantastic recommendation. It’s so exciting being able to smile about music again.
Absolutely fantastic review. one of my favorites from you. I'm sure you've already been told, but I noticed two little typos: "were the strings swell" instead of where in the first paragraph, and the second last paragraph, you say "hears" instead of ears. regardless, like I said, absolutely great review.
Only cause we're talking Camp Cope, but after watching their Audiotree this year it really hit me how important Philadelphia is to keeping rock music alive - and like, not just here in the US but the whole world.... and especially considering female acts like Hop Along, Cayetana, Waxahatchee, etc.
Having a lot of time with this record, I actually think Sprained Ankle still hits me more because of how deeply personal and startling it was to me. This doesn't have the same element of surprise and the lyrics don't hit me as hard this time around (and no one song is the clear centerpiece like "Rejoice" was). But they're both 10/10 records. The expanded instrumentation makes it the perfect progression and it really is an objectively better album from an artistic standpoint.
Sprained Ankle is in my top 5 records of all time. 100% agree with this, despite having TOTL as my AOTY.
True story - I'm yet to listen to Sprained Ankle! But absolutely love this one. I will buy Sprained Ankle after this has been out for a few more months.
At this point I'd probably just say that I like them equally, giving the slight edge to Sprained Ankle if I had to pick one or the other. I can see TOTL becoming my definitive favorite with some more time, but I just can't deny the emotional connection I have with SA that I've formed over the past 2 years, versus less than 3 weeks with this album.
Sour Breath is killing me at the moment. One of my songs of the year for sure. The part where she sings "You're everything I want and I'm all that you dread" and the guitars come back in gives me chills every time (well the whole album does, honestly).
