Okay, here's 100 Dollars. My phone was having a moment and going in and out of focus, sorry. Download link to audio: https://www.mediafire.com/file/i6je1mfsikdt6rd/100dollars.mp3
damn I love appointments "Maybe it's all gonna turn out all right, And I know that it's not, but I have to believe that it is"
Yeah, that’s a pretty problematic comment. Saying you want to marry a woman - a queer woman, no less - because you like her music is just not a good look.
I'm terribly sorry, but we just disagree completely. What would you like me to do? It was clearly hyperbolic and entirely facetious. I know nothing of her - I'm just saying she has the voice of a fucking angel. I'm so appreciative and in awe of her ability that I felt compelled to say something that I believed to be positive. Educate me if you wish, but I'm fine with what I said and I can't feign any sense of guilt to assuage how it may have made you feel.
Then say she has the voice of an angel. Not that you want to marry an openly queer woman who has spoken out before about men validating her work and treating women with respect. Do better.
Again, I knew nothing of Julien Baker before this evening, but I'm still confounded. I'm an ignorant dolt and I'll see my way out...I don't want to marry her anymore.
According to your profile you are a 31 year old man. Julien is a 22 year old queer woman. In a society that is overwhelming patriarchal and rampantly misogynstic, saying you want to “marry” a female artist simply because you like the art they create is incredibly objectifying and inappropriate. It doesn’t matter if it was said in jest or was intended to be facetious. You just said yourself that you don’t know her. You wouldn’t say that about any other random woman; you should not say that about her just because she is an artist. It’s disrespectful to her as a musician and a woman.
I mean, I have said that about other random woman - actresses, artists, female athletes, models, woman on the street, etc. In fact! I said it about Jaylen Brown tonight - I told my friend that I love him so much that I want to marry that man. I mean it in an endearing sense. I realize that it's not PC enough for some, but I only meant to verbalize a great deal of reverence and admiration I have for her/him/others. I'm at a loss, because I don't think I can do much better, simply because I just don't understand. You're all making me feel like I'm a republican! lol
That’s super weird and not at all a compliment. I promise you that Julien and most women would not at all be flattered if you expressed your admiration in that way. There’s nothing endearing about suggesting that you want to marry a person you’ve never met. It always entirely distracts from the valid reasons why you should appreciate an artist. If you like her music, shit, talk about that, but bringing some strange comment about marriage into it is utterly irrelevant and ultimately a perpetuation of the way in which many men view female artists: as trophies, novelties, or objects of physical attraction. I don’t care if this is normalized behavior for you. It is not acceptable discourse when talking about a female artist. It’s kind of creepy. There are so many decent, not weird ways to express reverence for an artist. Why not choose one of those?
Google is your friend. If you like an artist so much to want to marry them in jest, take two minutes to do research into who they are before commenting on a thread dedicated to them. If you truly meant it in jest and as an off-but-well-meaning statement, it can slide in my eyes as a one-time error, in hopes that you learn going forward, but it can definitely come across as gross to those who knows JB and her views / convictions or those who just view that wording as demeaning.
I just thought of that screenshot I saw of a twitter post saying something along the lines of "if you keep calling us Nazis, maybe we'll become Nazis." I know I may be blowing this way out of proportion by comparing it to like the most extreme example possible, but like, dude, if someone says you're fucking up, don't fuck up more. You're coming off as being all "But I didn't mean anything bad by it or have any bad intentions, I'm a good person, stop yelling at me!" and that doesn't get us anywhere. I'm sure you're a nice dude, but when you're called out for not being "PC" or whatever, it's not because you're being offensive and we're butthurt, it's because we want you to do better. (Also, I know a lot of them are bigots, but don't use "Republican" like it's a bad word. That's like them calling us "liberals.")
So Julien’s Glasgow record store performance included a cover of Audioslave’s Doesn’t Remind Me. I hope someone managed to catch it on vid.
Damn. I assume she’ll play the same set for the next in-store...exciting stuff. That or 100 Dollars will do nicely haha.
