Put this on for my drive to work then went to get gas after 3 songs and immediately regretted it. Still need a full, uninterrupted listen. But it's predictably great.
this is very good, much better than the last, but i still wish there was more sonic diversity on this. i can't help but to compare this to phoebe bridgers and i definitely like what phoebe did more than this. also pretty different lyrical styles which has to do with it as well.
Julien is my AOTY but that Phoebe album is top 10 quality too - shit man Dead Oceans is just killing it this year
I still don't know what Phoebe Bridgers has to do with this. Are they related? They sound like two completely different works.
Everything That Helps Me Sleep is unreal. I’m happy these songs are a bit more fleshed out instrumentally than Sprained Ankle. Love that record but I was kind of worried everything would start sounding the same. I echo whoever said it would be really cool to hear her over a full post-rock type band arrangement.
two singer songwriters that are gaining traction at about the same time that both focus on really dark, sad topics
They’re both singer songwriters in their early 20s who make really sad music with beautiful voices. They’ve also toured together a bit. I found out about Phoebe Bridgers when she opened for Julien Baker last year. Edit: cwhit beat me to it haha
Gotcha. I've heard them mentioned together in a couple threads (not just by Shit) but I honestly didn't associate them sonically at all when listening to Bridgers, who is indeed fantastic.
Dead Oceans just released Destroyers new album too. That Morby album is my AOTY. They have had a really great year.
I always relate the 2 as well. I'm sure it's wildly unpopular but I've always preferred Bridgers. Not to insult Baker, of course. They're both extremely high up on my list of favorite songwriters.
A lot of the songs build on here similar to Jimmy Eat World too - Appointments for sure wouldn’t sound out of place on futures or integrity blues
