Pre-ordered this today on clear vinyl. Will attempt to order the orange on release though! Beyond excited for this. Such a shame the UK dates are so limited, I’d have loved to have seen her.
It’s a killer that’s for a sure. Not nearly as irritating as Brand New though. ‘UK tour’ they said. Then they slapped two dates on the table. London and Glasgow. Come onnnnn haha
I'm going to Leeds! Live in Newcastle so won't be home until about 1am I'm guessing. Haha yeah that sucked. I'm still doing both though.
Fair play. You're the winner here. I'm still tempted by the Leeds show but I know how much it messes up my week. Julien Baker, although good, hasn't become an artist I'm ready to mess up my week for! Yet...
It's happening pretty regularly now too... Alright for some! Very jealous! I always imagine her shows to be like Keaton Henson's - atmospheric, intense, quiet. I hope so anyhow haha.
Yeah, I live in Sheffield and I can't remember the last time a US band I like played here. When you tend to listen to bands from overseas it does become a problem. Luckily Manchester, Leeds & Nottingham are all relatively close and seem to attract a few more bands I like than Sheffield but even a notable city like Manchester can get missed out on a two date 'UK tour'.
It's so irritating, especially as I'm from the Midlands - you'd expect the 'second city' (questionable now, some say it's Manchester lately) Birmingham to always be included. Yet here I am travelling up and down the country for bands! Very frustrating. The thing is, Birmingham is usually fantastic for gigs. Bands always used to come here. Now it's starting to decline though...
Yeah, growing up most of the bands would definitely hit Manchester, Birmingham and London. I grew up in Nottingham and used to come down to Birmingham or up to Manchester all the time! Now only London seems a given. I have no idea how the finances work for UK tours - you'd think getting over here would cost so much you might as well hit at least a few more of the major cities.
This is precisely my logic with it - if you come all the way to England from the US, it makes no sense to me that you'd then only do two dates. And surely, travelling from London to Scotland is massively expensive? Make stops on the way you fools!
Bought tickets to see her in LA in Dec! Last time I saw her live was Feb 2016 at a tiny standing room venue, so I'm excited to see her play a theater venue.
Julien will be on Prairie Home Companion next Saturday night. Season Opener — Hosted by Chris Thile with Chris Stapleton, Julien Baker, Laurie Kilmartin, and duet partner Emily King
Ever since Thile took over hosting last year, the musical guests got better and better. This will be a hell of a show.
I did see that her spotify has a playlist for singles so I imagine we'll get at least one more before release. I never did understand when I'd see So and So European tour and it's like 4 dates. Is there a reason for that?
Julien Baker on How Faith Informs Her Unflinching New LP This is a very cool little piece. I'm not a person of faith, but I really appreciate the way Julien talks and writes about her own. I think it's so special to have a queer woman like Julien in the music world who can speak about the intersection of her identities, like sexuality and faith, in a time where people are so prone to dividing them.
I’m writing my grad thesis on this exact thing right now (with regards to Sprained Ankle). Also how she utilizes aspects of Southern Gothic literature to do so.
Really interesting piece! I’ve listened to Julien for a little over a year now, and I genuinely didn’t know about her sexuality until yesterday, when out of the blue I decided to see if there were any articles about the new album. I have so much respect for the way she holds herself and whatnot. And as someone who is also not religious, I actually really admire the way Julien approaches it in her writing. So very excited for this album. Here’s to hoping a new single comes soon!
That is amazing! Would you be able to share it (or at least excerpts from it) here when you're finished? I'd be extremely interested in reading it.
