I thought this album was decent on first listen, but honestly anytime Torres sang it just wasn't my vibe, if I never hear Sylvia again it will be too soon
The show in Richmond last night was truly something. Maybe I was in a weird part of the crowd, but I finally experienced the youths that…have no idea how to behave at shows? It was really weird? upside: Julien and Torres sounded fantastic live and I truly loved their outfits. But also JULIEN PLAYING THE BANJO!
sad to say this album doesn’t really do a ton for me but I think it’s mostly fine. i lose interest about halfway through and it feels like it just keeps going. i’m a big and longtime torres fan but this is easily my least favorite version of her
I should clarify, I do not NOT like the Torres led stuff, but I definitely prefer the Julien stuff as a long time Julien follower. Also agree that this could have been an EP
I understand why some people are not into this album, but this is my favorite thing Julien has released (full project wise) since Turn Out The Lights.
No way this is better than little oblivions (it’s probably better than turn out the lights and the boygenius stuff tho)
I won't compare, cause I hold those aforementioned Julien records very high in my rankings (and actually TOTL especially), but this is quite pleasant - some of the vocal lines that get a bit more in your face sound so good on headphones (like on Downhill Both Ways). I need to give it a few more shots still!
I’m also a bigger fan of the Julien songs (I mean, that’s why I’m interested in the project), but there’s a couple of Torres ones I’ve also enjoyed. Ironically enough, one of those is Sylvia lol However, there is a criminal lack of love for Showdown in this thread! Song is easily above anything else on here and sounds like a Julien Baker classic.
I like all three Julien Baker albums more than either of the collaborative projects she’s done. But, I imagine I’ll end up with a summer playlist with most of this album, and will end up liking the songs vibes wise when they come up on shuffle.
gotta be real, i mean no disrespect, but the whole time i was listening to this i was wishing it was a julien solo project. torres just doesn’t work for me. i’ve tried unsuccessfully to get into her solo stuff on multiple occasions, and i don’t like her any better here. a couple of her songs were genuinely hard for me to get through. that being said, not mad about having some new julien songs (especially in this style) to listen to. downhill both ways in particular is fantastic. no way this touches any of her solo stuff, however.
This is where I'm at with it. As a whole, I don't love it, but I got a couple good songs to throw in my Julien playlist (Tape Runs Out fits perfectly next to the full band version of Shadowboxing). Basically feel the same about boygenius
