San Francisco openers and ER Fightmaster is opening one of the LA dates (others not announced yet, she just said she was on a podcast)
Love what this is doing for Katie Malco’s profile. I think she was on about 4k monthly Spotify listeners prior to the tour and now upto almost 20k. Obviously still very modest numbers, but I think she has a new album coming next year (which I assume the latest two songs will be on) and this could help propel her forward a fair bit.
Yeah I had never heard of her before these shows, but I've been listening to her constantly since the Chicago shows. Absolutely deserves any buzz she gets
Katie was supposed to open for Julien back on the Little Oblivions tour but had to cancel because it was impossible for foreign acts to come over and tour in the US at the time due to Covid restrictions. I was bummed at the time because I had been wanting to see her for a little bit but she eventually came to Chicago with Soak and it was awesome! Then she did the three Chicago JB shows and just came back again for a headlining Chicago show this past Thursday, which I also went to. So now I have seen her 5 times and every time has been great. She played quite a few new songs last week. and all the songs sounded really good. I am happy she is getting her redemption to being the opener for Julien and I am happy it is happening now because while Julien was popular on the Little Oblivions tour she is definitely on another level now. Also, it helps that Katie is very charismatic and funny on stage and very engaging with the audience.
Absolutely. I’ve seen her three times in the UK, once headlining (full band in a tiny room) and supporting Laura Stevenson and Fenne Lily and she was hilarious every time. Not sure whether the humour would always translate over the Atlantic but good to see she’s getting some positive reaction.
How was the Color Club show? I love that venue and really enjoyed her opening sets for JB, just couldn't make it out.
It was great! She was very engaging with the crowd and played quite a few new songs and then some songs from Failures. I got to talk to her after the show and she is super nice!
This was a nice surprise, I've been sooo into Medium Build for more than 2 years now, it's gonna be a sweet collab
There is a group of women who have been physically following Julien’s tour (meaning going to all the dates, or at least a good majority of them). They all decided to wear matching shirts for one of the LA shows and made an extra one for Julien and, well, it’s pretty amazing.
I actually haven't listened to Little Oblivions nearly as much as the other two, so I wasn't familiar with as much of this set list as the previous times I've seen her, but it was still a magical experience. She always seems so hard on herself tho, constantly reacting to mistakes I don't even notice
Just an FYI: Things are happening over at Julien Baker & Torres - TBA (2024?) • forum.chorus.fm JB and Torres are playing Big Ears Festival and High Water Festival next year There’s a new website at Julien Baker & TORRES with promo pics, lyric tease, a music video tease, and a tour dates section that will likely be filled up eventually and Julien says more to come (album announcement) so come join the thread!
The first night of the JB London residency starts tonight and as far as I know.. no opening acts have been announced or set times either!!
What an day and night yesterday.. it's gonna be a long one so bare with me on this! Getting there and back on the tube and changing to the overground and getting to the venue was surprisingly easy but I met some nice people in the queue and the area in in Dalson in Hackney London and it was shops and take ours everywhere so thank goodness I can go for food and drink without any issues and the queue was well behaved and chill out although I got told and saw there was one fan who's American and mid to late 40's maybe 50 was his 49th Julien show and today as I am writing this is gonna be his 50th Julien show!! Fucking insane!! Anyways I got into the venue, got a tour t shirt which cost £30 and got into my position.. now in front of me was an old woman with her daughter was at the barrier and we started talking and then told me because I told her my age and it was a theme that they were all in shock that I am 40 and people thought I was mid 26 or 28 but when I told them my actual age they said how do u look so young hahaha! But anyways the old woman in front of me said to me that I am a grown man that listens to in her words "teenage girly music" and it annoyed me but I didn't want to say all the swear words under the sun so instead I explain my story and how I got into her music and music but lyrics in general r open to interpretation which means Julien's songs might be meaningful for people of all ages so it doesn't matter if u r in teens/twenties or 40's or over.. if the music hits u in right the feels then age doesn't matter and there was people of all walks of life at the show that so don't judge anyone at face value at first and she was quiet after that. Anyways the support acts Katie Malco and Soak were really good but Julien Baker was amazing!! Worth the long wait and trip!!
Teenage girly music sure has changed a lot since I was a kid if that's what Julie Baker is considered now lol
i feel like boygenius (as individuals) feels so far removed from like Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo who i'd more categorize as teeny girl music. (and even then, parents taking young children to see them are shocked by the adult nature of their performances haha.) i feel like Chappell Roan occupies a sort of middle ground, tho idk if that's bc she's not a disney kid or she just happens to be queer. stylistically Chappell's music sounds like something that wouldn't go mainstream (even tho it obv has), the same way that the boys are indie artists who just happened to get popular. ... I'd been thinking about this a lot...
Her fan base has definitely skewed younger post-Boygenius. That being said, I would not call Julien Baker teenage girly music.
