I get that but the immediate first thing you think of when listening is Julien so while I sympathize with her feelings…she really does sound like TOTL/older era Julien here and I think it’s a little too much. Not just the vocals but the melodies/lyrics/instruments/production too. I love this style of music so I’m not against Julien’s sound influencing a newer generation of musicians at all but when it sounds like a near carbon copy, I get why people make the comparison and aren’t a fan.
I totally get it too, although I personally love some of her material, really like the new EP, I'm glad I'm getting a bit more stuff in that style, but I also truly hope she'll branch out. I think it's also quite odd to even dispute how should one woman look like in comparison to another, there's plenty of men in the scene wearing the same clothes and haircuts etc. I'd probably trade the telecaster for something else to make sure I could hear less of that, but that's me being self-conscious, and here from an outsider perspective I really don't care that much (or maybe should I?)
I can understand that she might feel boxed in, but man, it’s pretty much copying on some songs. Lyrical content is often exactly the same as Julien’s songs. I do like this style of music, but would like to see people have a little of their own style. I like some parts of her songs, but it ends up feeling like “We have Julien Baker at home” at certain points.
Oh to be clear my comment was just saying that when I saw her Spotify picture I immediately thought of Julien’s Audiotree picture. Not in a negative way, it’s just what came to my mind although I can see how it can be perceived as a negative comment (not my intention though)
This really sounds like someone typed Julien Baker into a very sophisticated AI. Even the lyrics are quite good and poetic but feel ripped right out of Julien's playbook. Have never in my life experienced something this uncanny with an artist sounding so similar to another. That said, Nick Webber is in her fans also like section and everyone in this thread needs to go hear All the Nothing I Know right now. It's incredible.

Yeah once you keep diving deeper there are just waaaaaaaay too many similarities. This is definitely a bit weird. There’s nothing wrong with sounding a little similar to another musician but you need to also have your own identity and not copy their style exactly or extremely similarly.
Didn’t Julien and Torres confirm in like summer 2022 that they finished recording a collab country album? When the heck is that coming!
If you scroll through this post there’s a picture of them in the studio on slide 8. It doesn’t answer your question but it was recently shared to Instagram.
Tough stretch, too. Novo Amor and The National are both on 9/24. I'll be there for the first and third nights. Just a brutal week of shows, too. These and then I have The National in Madison later in the week before two days of Ameican Football.
Same tbh, idk that I can pull it off but if I miss her playing Good News or Go Home by picking the wrong show I will perish
Curious if these shows will sell out instantly or not. I know she got a big bump from boygenius but I don’t know how much of that will transfer to ticket sales for her solo shows/if on sale will be a bloodbath or not. The Little Oblivions tour shows were easy to get but that was before boygenius.
Going to have to try and get tickets to Thalia. Never seen her live and need to make sure it happens asap.
