That’s what I’m saying, haha. I think it’s plenty popular and well-received. It just doesn’t seem to have the same critical push that TOTL had. Which is fine.
I would also say this is a favorite for my AOTY, at this point. I don't necessarily listen to it all the time, but each time I go back to it I remember how amazing it is, and in most cases pick up on new things (some background instrumentation or lyrics I didn't notice the first time) with each listen.
It’s hard for me to articulate exactly why, but I kinda get why it’s not as revelatory for some as the first two. Even though I think it’s another masterpiece, it’s unflinchingly bleak even by Julien’s standards.
I love Julien, and I remember loving this album when it first came out, but for some reason I just haven't had a desire to return to it much.
Julien re-recorded her song Sprained Ankle for the film she scored, North By Current. You can hear the new version below.
I listened to this album while driving with the windows down on Saturday night and it was really wonderful, despite being the exact opposite of my vibe at the time. It'll be a top album of the year for me if I just keep pushing play, otherwise it'll drop.
“I miss you like a mantra till I forget what it means” Man, this line is just me. I moved a year ago and have felt this for my best friends. Their absence brings such an all-consuming sadness that sometimes I can hardly even remember how I got there... There’s just a void. Then it’s like, “Oh yeah, I really miss my brothers.”
For me it's "I swear off all the things I thought that got me here / In the evening, I'll come back again". As someone who's been struggling with addiction for years, that one cuts deep. The idea of swearing it off after a bad night only to go right back to it... it hits pretty close to home
so this album is, I guess, helping me process some stuff lately, or at least giving me something to cry to 'I don't need your help, I need you to leave me alone'
If you liked Julien's earlier stuff, you'll like this. More fleshed-out but the vibe is still there. Maria Kelly from Dublin releases her debut album in October. Also FFO Ada Lea, Indigo de Souza etc.
