Ringside is fantastic So is Relative Fiction The final chorus of Repeat is awesome Outro in highlight reel is pretty sweet The ending seemed pretty abrupt compared to Go Home.
I know it's basically going into the lions den with this comment but... this album is nice enough, but after one listen it feels like more of the same to me. Was kinda hoping that a full band sound would make this album stand apart more, but I don't think it does.
It's not that I personally want to like, project what she should do as an artist or anything, but I truly feel like 80% of the songs on this album could be placed in the track list of her last album and I wouldn't second guess it at all. Just overall I was hoping for something that stood apart from her previous material and I think only maybe a couple tracks feel that way
since i didnt end up pre-ordering this like a rube i'm gonna try and get that sweet indie variant from newbury tomorrow evening/this weekend
Also the lyrics have always been a strong point for her and the lyrics are super gut wrenching here and powerful and I love that about this record. Sure, she may not have changed up her sound the way Phoebe did from SITA->Punisher but that doesn’t make the songs less intriguing for me.
I’ll admit there’s a lot that’s taking the dynamics of her previous songs and applying some new instruments, but idk that doesn’t feel too off from most follow up albums? If anything adding all this instrumentation is a bigger step than most. I can understand expecting something WAY different because of the narrative, but I think there’s still a lot of growth here. Just finished a listen a little bit ago the whole thing definitely feels “exciting” to me. I really love the bouncy feel to a lot of the songs, the added drums really do a lot for this record.
I haven't listened to any of the pre-release tracks and just hit play on this for the first time; the first song is definitely showing a Daughter influence, and I am very much here for it
And if we’re talking Boygenius career trajectories, I’d say TOTL->Little Oblivions is pretty comparable to the SITA->Punisher jump, outside I Know the End. Also think she really nailed it with a “concept record” here. The narrative is really tight through the whole thing.
Yeah I think the addition of drums is going to be big for me in terms of replayability - as great as Sprained Ankle is, it's an album I don't find myself reaching for all that often because I have to be in a certain mood for it (a mood I don't generally want to be in). This record, while still being emotionally heavy, seems a lot more conducive to throwing on while driving around in the car, being out walking around etc.
Listened twice so far while working. Planning on sitting and listening with the lyric booklet tonight. So far Hardline is still my favorite, with Song in E close behind.
I’m literally so tired and have had such a stressful week but I have to stay up to listen to this at least once
