Lot of great (and some not great) artists in this scene write about their conflicts with faith in ways that are more open and honest than the church or strictly “Christian “ music allows, if I were to guess a reason lol.
I was one too. Specifically for teaching little kids at church camps in the bible belt of Texas. Now I am non-religious as it gets.
former worship leader checking in. i’m drawn to music like this because it has spiritual allusions and themes that i’m very familiar with. i’m not religious anymore but that was a big part of my life.
Damn, what is that, six of us? What are the odds? Guess there's a niche there that Julien's music really fills
With the conversation going on in here about religion, I feel like some of y’all would be really into Stephanie Lambring and Semler (Grace Baldridge). Semler just dropped the Preacher’s Kid EP and it’s a solid rumination on being raised in faith, being hurt by it, yet still aching for the peace you know it brings to others. I love it. Stephanie Lambring’s “Autonomy” album hits on a lot of similar notes.
I’ll follow this with if you haven’t watched Grace’s Refinery29 video series on religion and queerness, I highly recommend doing so.
Damn. Thank you for sharing this. Now I’m even more interested in Grace as a person. I find her fascinating. The conversation with Jackie Hill Perry alone and her reaction to it...wow. She’s doing a Facebook Live Listening Party & Conversation with Derek Webb on Monday so I’m really looking forward to that: https://fb.me/e/3omQB8yLR
You're welcome! Ever since I saw her first State of Grace episode, I have been fascinated as well. She seems wonderful.
This feels like the longest album roll out ever. I haven’t listened to any singles so I’m excited for next week!
This is my most anticipated album in...a while. Not that I haven't been excited about other releases but I know this is going to be fantastic and really knock me on my ass.
Also I hope she gains a bunch of new fans with this record. This isn't directed at anyone specific at all but I feel like a lot of people listen to Phoebe and are huge fans of hers but Julien and Lucy get a bit less attention, which is understandable as they are more introverted than Phoebe, but still. I'm not expecting her (and Lucy when her album comes out) to blow up like Phoebe, but I hope she (and Lucy) at least get a bit more attention this release than previous releases.
