I personally love MDTKM. This one wasn't bad by any means on first listen. Dug the second half more. 9 songs, 17 minutes. Definitely working smarter, not harder. Legendary.
Vice versa, secret sisters was a bside from NHA and then he changed it around and made NBTSA for the Polyvinyl series. And then decided to put both on here lol
I for one gotta admit I had no idea it's a cover. Thus I'm now on my first listen ever of "Architecture and Morality" from 1981 haha, pretty cool. Well, seems weird to use a cover as an album opener then - but it's pretty good to me!
same thing for me with spoons latest album, I didnt know either openers were covers until like 5 listens of them haha
man, dance with me has to have some of my favorite joyce lyrics in a minute. that song is a certified banger. lol at his girlfriend trying to get him to change the chorus when he first played it for her. "Look at me yelling love is free Then why is everybody always stealing shit from Best Buy? Could it be that the rooms empty And I'm just tearing out my heart for the sound guy?"
MDTKM is great and Barry should give that record more credit. I got through my Fresno first listen during lunch and I, not being familiar with the track listing, was shocked when it rolled back over to Souvenir - not sure if it's a good or a bad thing. Reason to Believe was a hit w/ me on the first playthrough. You're not famous anymore & Dance w/ Me on the second. I love the poppier side of JM, but I would kill for an entire record with the energy of Gotta Let it Go.
He does give it credit - in my interview he mentions how wildflowers is one of his favorite JM songs ever
Haven't been able to read your interview yet. In the BV podcast, he says (and I'm paraphrasing) writing and recording that record felt like they were just going through the motions - in comparison to some of their other records. (To his credit, he says that without a negative or positive connotation)
this was fun, just another JM album though You’re Not Famous Anymore and Dance With Me are early standouts
Seems it was the longest break between albums though! And some of those songs were already released - luckily not to my ears ;d ;d
