New Josh Ritter album produced by Jason Isbell is available for preorder now. "Old Black Magic" is great.
I was hoping to find the song 'In Passing' somewhere on a deluxe edition or something after reading the description of it in that Rolling Stone write up a while back, but I'm not seeing any extra songs anywhere. I wanted to hear her three fiddle parts stacked up.
I really like the first released track. SOTR is my favorite of his records, mostly because of the more flushed out and rock-ish tracks. Can y'all tell us anything about it? Is this pretty representative?
Craig, can you record yourself telling us your thoughts on this album but whispering very, very quietly while the album plays very, very loudly in the background...?
Haha, I sense ulterior motives @Brother Beck. First song is definitely representative. The 400 Unit has a MAJOR presence on this album. It's a more guitar-driven record, thanks to Isbell and Sadler Vaden playing all over it, and Amanda Shires adds a lot of fiddle and backing vocal work. Sonically, it reminds me the most of either Here We Rest or Something More Than Free from Isbell, crossed with, like, mid-90s Counting Crows. Lyrically, there's lot of very political-leaning stuff, including one very Woodie Guthrie-ish folk song that I just love. But it doesn't strike me as preachy or heavy-handed. Most of the stuff plays out in Ritter's trademark story song form.
This sounds like exactly what I was hoping for from them in the studio together. Ridiculously excited to hear this.
New song is fantastic, really excited for this record. I've always liked Josh's stuff but this feels like it could be a step up for him, especially based upon Craig's sneak preview haha
been meaning to listen to this guy forever. knowing Jason Isbell produced this I guess this sounds like a good place to start
