Slant gave this 0/4 which I don't think I've ever seen from them before (to be clear I disagree with almost all of their reviews and am still very excited to see this).
the negative takes seem to boil down to people being mad that its not mean enough to nazis when like,,,,,the point of the movie that its from a 10 year old indoctrinated boys perspective and revolves around his arc on that?? ok!
Honestly I kind of can't really picture a way for a satirical film to be meaner to Nazis than having a Jewish PoC from New Zealand portray Hitler as a 10-year-old's imaginary buffoonish caricature
....exactly lmao I think the subject matter is just inherently not going to be something that everyone feels ok with and that's FINE if the movie looks good to you, you'll probably like it
Wow yeah Slant ripped it and a few critics I follow on Twitter/letterboxd trashed this. I still have some interest, although that last trailer felt a bit too cutesy for me
"Anti-Semitic slurs and stereotypes are also consistently utilized for easy guffaws." ...did the reviewer know that Taika is a Polynesian Jew? I mean, not everyone has to be into the same comedy. And, the film could be bad for all I know. But, dropping this sentence in a 0/4 review w/out that context has a very "why do black rappers use the n word" energy to it.
Ya so I loved this. Incredibly funny and very on point with its message. I personally thought it was one of the best modern uses of satire I’ve seen. (It also won the TIFF peoples choice award but tbh that means absolutely nothing considering green book won it last year lmao)
i was very excited about seeing this in the lead up, even after some of the initial press. kinda growing more sour towards it seeing reviews from people i trust discussing the amount of anti-semitic content in it played for laughs (yes, i realize taika is jewish. that doesn’t exempt you from being anti-semitic).
None of the complaints about that stuff is what bothers me, it's that from everything that I'm reading, it's all incredibly lazy and infantilizing. That's why I'm not really looking forward to this one anymore.
