r/JohnMayer - New Light "Usually when John Mayer debuts brand new music live, I don't get that excited because I know it's going to take multiple listens for me to appreciate the nuance of the sound and words. But tonight at the Masonic for Controlled Danger, he debuted a song "New Light" that for the first time had me (and the crowd) hooked immediately. I'm more excited for his new music than I have been in the last decade. The new sound is fun and unbeat. It's simple and accessible. The song felt like John throwing his hat in the ring in this new streaming age where Drake has changed all the rules of how to compete and release music. He even said it's not about waiting for months for people to approve albums. He could drop this song in 48 hours "if someone makes him feel small." Realistically, John hasn't had a mainstream hit in ages. He was on a different self reflective path for a while. But he was always talented enough to make it. And here he finally has. This song is gonna be such a good summer jam. His inspiration was driving around in a Saab in Connecticut in the 80's with Snapple bottle caps on the ground. It's been so long since he made music reminiscing about the good times like "83." He's in such a good headspace now and it's showing in the sound." Interesting.......
I'm excited to hear the song but I hope it's not just a one off single although I feel like it probably is.
I just wish it was a song built off the demo he posted of his new guitar a few weeks "going direct into the board". (Several people on YouTube have actually borrowed this clip and added drums and other instruments to it - pretty cool if you are bored and want to search YouTube).
Was there ever a reason given as to why he didn’t go ahead with his plan of 4 songs a month last year? Or did that literally just die when the album dropped without an explanation?
He performed in KC the night the album came out and he barely mentioned it. I’d really like to hear his thoughts on it and the botched rollout.
Direct to the board baby you can thank the dead for that and also that little descending lick about halfway through is deffo a MLB interpolation
I'm still pissed about that rollout. What a disaster that was. But game to hear whatever he's working on.
I don’t even think I would have minded if he just acknowledged it and gave SOME sort of explanation. Just such a bizarre thing.
I meet musicians somewhat frequently with my job and I generally never fan out, but I will 100% ask John about this rollout if I ever get a chance.
I’m always down for some new JM. I need to give his newest stuff a better chance. All I know is I liked it more than Paradise Valley. I still jam to Try! And Where The Light Is. amazing live albums.
People got very preoccupied and pissed about that album rollout, and in the meantime missed what was in reality yet another great, nuanced John Mayer album I listened to The Search for Everything just the other day and its still great. "Helpless" is a god damn jam, "Moving On" is fantastic, "Love on the Weekend" is a slow burner, "Still Feel Like Your Man" is a sexy tune, "In The Blood" is perfect folk-country writing... perhaps the album sputters at the end, but not all that poorly I'm ready for a poppy hit though
