Saw the Chicago show last night. It was a great show. He really is an exceptional guitar player, and the set list was pretty spot on (would've loved to see In Your Atmosphere, Stop This Train, and In Repair, but I'm not even going to complain about it).

John Mayer Trio was probably the highlight of the night. When they were coming out I looked to my friend and said I hoped they played Who Did You Think I Was, and then they almost immediately started playing it. I'm really excited to see Dead & Company now. It'll be really cool to just watch him shred for the night. And I'll most likely see him when he comes back around in September, so it's going to be a very full year of John Mayer and I can't wait.

Apparently people who have gotten the CD preorder in say that the inside cover call this "Volume 1", so it looks like we'll be getting at least another full Search for Everything album later this year.

Excited that there will be more music, but it makes me hesitant to get the vinyl of Vol. 1, because I'm sure there will end up being some kind of box set once all parts of this are released.

Anyone see John's new PRS signature guitar? Looks like a strat with a PRS neck. So sweet.

"In the Blood" is wonderful. Probably the best song on the record.

The three new songs are all great. Interlude is whatever. Still haven't listened to the whole thing together.

I'm not surprised he didn't release these four as an individual wave. That would have been pretty aggressively mid-tempo. Haha

In The Blood is getting replayed over and over. Rosie is also great to groove to.

Glad there's a "Vol. 1" in the CD, bring on more tunes!

Did the new songs leak or get released? I haven't come across them.

So I didn't spend much time with the EPs, which means I'm absolutely loving this record. "Never on the day you leave" is a heartbreaker, and the general vibe of this record is just perfect April/May. It feels like back when the schoolyear was coming to an end and you're noticing the distance between who you are and who you hoped to be. And you're lying up at night with the screen open because fuck the pollin the breeze helps. And the fan is lazy and the drink is tepid and you're getting little flashbacks and memories flicking through. And you want to say "remember the time we" but you're only talking to the dog and he's already asleep. So you nod along to the lyrics and the guitar because what they're saying is half perfect and half completely wrong. But it's fine because it's not incorrect, just different.

  12. This album is super boring. Gonna have to wait until November, or when I need to fall asleep, to give it another listen. Dropping "Wave" in at the second song spot is sequencing malpractice.

Agreed. This album has a clear thematic throughline and tells a loose story, but that doesn't mean it's good musical sequencing.

The "Volume 1" thing is very nice to hear. I keep thinking of cool merch things he could do with this project as originally laid out. Like, what if he let you make your own unique vinyl sequence with your 12 favorite tracks?

That would be such a cool concept, although it sounds like a logistical nightmare, but a build your own John Mayer vinyl would be amazing. Choose 12 songs, choose your cover art, and choose the vinyl color.

Yeah, Emoji of a Wave should not be track two.

That said I really enjoy this. Changing and the Interlude track are the only ones I'm not keen on. Still Feel Like Your Man, Helpless, In The Blood & Moving On And Getting Over are all great.

I really like this as a whole, it's probably my favourite album of the year so far although that says more about me and music this year than it does about the quality of this album. It still feels like he's tried to do both his bluesy stuff and his more folky stuff but without really focusing on one it's just led to a more watered down version of both. I think these are great songs for the most part but they all feel like worse versions of songs he's already written. The one exception is probably "You're Gonna Live Forever in Me" which feels new but is also the one song I don't like at all.

Totally agree. I'm so disappointed. In the blood is the only song I connect with, give me an album full of songs like that.

in the blood is a great song. I still really like love on the weekend too. that song is really polished. really wish he followed the same theme for the rest of the album

  22. I felt this way about the EPs as I listened to them individually. But had a weird experience last night where I woke up around 3 AM and couldn't fall back asleep. Decided to put this on and found myself completely immersed. I made my way through the album and was really excited to get up later this morning and listen again (doing so right now). I think you almost have to be in that sleepy/half-awake state for some of Mr. Mayer's work to click.

P.S. Emoji of a Wave as a song title hurts me deep inside every time I look at the track list. I'm pretending that this doesn't exist.

I like this album, but I feel like I would love it if he hadn't botched the release so badly. "In the Blood" and "Never on the Day You Leave" really add a lot. Those are the kind of fantastic songwriting that was largely missing from the first two waves.

Yea what a strange way to release an album, and then he tweeted today that this was the end of an era, but the booklet says volume 1, so I have no idea if we should be expecting more. Would've preferred a traditional album release if it only ends up being this one album anyway.

Yeah, I saw that. I'm writing a review of this right now and I can't recall the last time I was this conflicted about an album.
