I remember a few weeks ago he either posted a video to Instagram or his Instagram story that mentioned Wave 6. Hopefully it continues for the foreseeable future.
Y'all seem to be overreacting a bit. Color me surprised if he genuinely buttleaks his own album, I think it was a facetious post and if anything probably only gave away what will be on the Third Wave EP. Do we have real reason to think anything else after he already told us he's releasing 48 songs this year? In any case, "Helpless" and "Moving On and Getting Over" are classic Mayer. Haven't been grabbed by much else so far.
April 14 is the release date. After thinking about it more and more, I'm like 90% sure he just wanted to chart high. He hadn't released physical versions of the first two "waves", so all the pre-album-release streams will count towards his Week 1 numbers. Add in the giveaway of an album with each tour ticket, which has become a blatantly transparent way to push sales, and it seems like he's more numbers-focused on this album release than I would've previously thought. Even if he gives us more waves, I'll be disappointed in the way he communicated this one after building up so much hype. Really feels like he shot himself in the foot with the diehard fans and cast a disappointing haze over how his first album in 4+ years will be received.
Yeah, he's about 3/8 for me as far as above average JM songs, though I know you weren't too bullish on any of them. There's nice moments in each of them.
Must have missed that. Yeah, I think it had to be a commercially motivated thing. Also, we're at about 3.5 years now. Paradise Valley was August 2013, right? I like all the songs, but I only love two of them. If I only love one of the songs from "wave 3," this will be my least favorite Mayer album. Which is fine. I don't "love" Paradise Valley either, but it's still one of the records with 2013 that's stuck with me most. I think I would have really dug this album more if he'd just dropped it without all the pretense.
Seriously though, am I missing something? Did he announce a full album? Or did he cloyingly post a tracklist made of up the 12 songs he said he'd release in 3 EPs?
Honestly from the songs so far it sounds about on par with Paradise Valley for me only without the cohesive vibe that album had and with a 4 year wait instead of a 1 year wait. Plus the added disappointment of me expecting like 48 songs and possibly only getting 12, ha.
I like Paradise Valley more at the moment, I think. Valley has a few songs I like less than anything on here, but it also had a fair bunch (namely the first three tracks and the last three) that I really loved. This collection so far only has two absolute home runs for me, in "Helpless" and "You're Gonna Live Forever in Me." Though supposedly "In the Blood" is the best song on the record.
He's called PV just some songs so he could tour Born and Raised and "not really an album", so I don't really think of it as a full project in the way all of his previous ones are. Seemed like a stopgap more than anything, although I might have to reevaluate after this rollout mess. Really hope he keeps dropping songs so I can get back to treating this like the project I was so excited for. These songs so far are fine, but the big issue to me is the lack of cohesion. That was a feature when it was a 40+ song Search for Everything, but now it's a bug.
Where'd he announce this? Any chance he's releasing the EPs two at a time, and then releasing the third by releasing an album made up of all 3? Still an odd choice, but that way at least he wouldn't be backing out on the whole "48 songs in a year" thing and we'd get 4 full albums in 2017.
Yeah, he said "it wasn't supposed to be there, so you can't hate it" or something like that. I still view it very much as an album, though. I think it's still pretty cohesive, even if it does feel like more of a "minor" release from him.
I can't recall him ever saying it wasn't an album, just that it wasn't as thought out and labored over as the rest. It was just something to do while his voice wasn't working and he couldn't tour. Very glad he made it instead of just chilling out for a few months, ha.
Didn't realize how disappointed a lot of people have been in these Waves. Personally I think Moving On, Helpless, Love on the Weekend and Still Feel Like Your Man are his best songs since Battle Studies.
