"On the Way Home" is totally a top five Mayer song for me at this point. Just a perfect wistful end-of-summer jam.
Paper Doll is great, upper half of the album for me. Who You Love and Call Me the Breeze are the only two I don't think are really good on there.
Still think the Frank Ocean interlude on that album is super weird and makes no sense in context. I wish they'd done a proper duet together. Missed opportunity.
Realised today that I had never listened to the full Where The Light Is. Listened on an evening walk just now and the second half where he just busts out most of Continuum is absolutely glorious.
Show tonight was fantastic! We got “Love Soon” which blew my mind. Couple other deep cuts in there, but it was seeing “Walt Grace” that made my night. John Mayer Setlist at PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh
Wow. What a set. Cannot wait for the LA show! My only want is continuing to cross my fingers I’ll hit the lottery and hear Comfortable live someday. No better tour than this one!
The new two hour interview he did with Rick Rubin is fantastic, there aren’t many people better than John at digging into the magic of songwriting and actionably, descriptively explaining how it’s a work and process. He also talks about making “Why You No Love Me” haha Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin: John Mayer on Apple Podcasts
Heavier Things has been a Winter album for me ever since I listened to "Clarity" on repeat whilst walking in a rare Atlanta snow.
Really loved this, thank you for sharing! All of this was good and interesting, he’s such a thoughtful person, which I don’t think people realize. But my favorite part was where he talked about the limitations of his voice and about writing specifically for what he can do as a vocalist. I don’t think a lot of musicians would have the humility to discuss that, but as someone who spent years studying vocal music and running up against the limitations of his own voice, I really appreciated that part.
Yeah the way he talked about John the vocalist being a separate guy that he has to work with was both funny and insightful. I also liked the bit about vowel sounds with Dead and Co. I think he should write a definitive book on songwriting with some kind of audio accompaniment or do some kind of master class. He’s too smart to leave it all in scattered interviews.
